Curious - What is the moon shaped key all about

I just purchased a new Compaq desktop. On the keyboard (above tee escape button) is a 1/2 moon shaped key. What is this button for?

Thanks,

Clubmaker

This button puts the computer into sleep mode.

FROM WIKIPEDIA-

Sleep mode can go by many different names, including Stand By (Microsoft Windows 95-Server 2003), Sleep (Mac OS 8)-(Mac OS X) / (Windows Vista,Windows Server 2008), and Suspend (Linux). When placed in this Sleep mode, aside from the RAM which is required to restore the machine's state, the computer attempts to cut power to all unneeded parts of the machine. Because of the large power savings, most laptops automatically enter this mode when the computer is running on batteries and the lid is closed.
Though Sleep and Hibernate are generally thought as two separate functions, modern Macintoshes, Windows Vista (termed Hybrid Sleep), and some specially configured Linux machines also feature a variation of Sleep mode that incorporates the strengths of Hibernate. The RAM is copied to the hard drive before sleep mode is initiated, preserving the RAM contents in the event of a power loss.
ACPI is the current standard for power management, superseding APM and providing the backbone for sleep and hibernation on modern computers. Sleep mode corresponds to ACPI mode S3. When a non-ACPI device is plugged in, Windows will sometimes disable stand-by functionality for the whole operating system. Without ACPI functionality, as seen on older hardware, sleep mode is usually restricted to turning off the monitor and spinning down the hard drive.

Moon

If the shape of the symbol is the cresent moon....then that is the "Sleep" shortcut key. It will send the hard drive into standby mode. In a lot of systems, this sleep mode can really corrupt and damage system files. I always recommend disableing sleep mode in the power options section of the control panel.

How do I get my monitor back on if I accidently press the key in the top left corner (with the half-moon shape on it). What is that key for?

That's the sleep button
(half-moon -> night-time -> sleep).
It puts the PC into standby mode. Pressing the power button should bring it back to life.

There is a narrow button with a C or crescent shape on it on my Compaq keyboard near the Escape key. I accidentally pushed it and all went black and I couldn't get anything back. Had to turn off to reboot....

Hi and thank you for using fixya:
That is the sleep button. When you press that key the computer goes into sleep mode. After it fully goes to sleep you can get it back by pressing the same button or pressing the power key
Thank you

Button function help

The quarter moon shaped icon is a sleep button. It will force your system to a sleep/hibernate mode. This may not cause a loss of interenet connection when the system is restarted. Try connecting to the internet again

Power Saver not working

The Logitech wireless keyboard "moon" key set the power saver on but would not return the screen no mater what key I hit. So, I connected a standard wired keyboard and hit the space bar. Once returned I disabled the "moon" key though the Logitech software.

Identifying & using grey buttons

Those are shortcut keys. The half moon puts your computer in standby mode. The envelope is email and so on. You need to have the program for your keyboard running, ie: logitech setpoint to use these keys then you can press them and see what they do. It's fairly easy to figure out from that point.
