If your trying to save a service call you have your work cut out for you. The ice maker is a unit that sits by itself attached to the wall or part of the freezer wall.
There are many reasons why you do not get ice and I will list them.
1- Temp of freezer got too cold and has frozen the pipe that feeds the water to fill the icemaker. check to see if the icemaker has any ice in the area that fills and makes the cubes. If the pipe is clogged, very gently put a small tipped screw driver in the fill hose that sites over the ice making row in the ice maker. Be careful you do not push your screwdriver out the back of the refer. Check to see the freezer temp is not too cold and is freezing that pipe. 0-3 degrees F is good.
2.- check to make sure your water feeding the fridge is on. There is an on off valve to allow the water to feed the icemaker when it needs to fill. This could be bad. there are reset proceedures for the fridge, but unplugging the entire frige for 1 minute and plugging it back in you can listen for the the valve to come on and see if it fills the ice maker resevoir.
3. If it fills and freezes the ice resevoir, then the sensor in the ice tray does not sense the frozen ice and will not cycle and kick cubes. At this point, unless you are super tech, you will need to replace the entire icemaker unit.

Good day, In most cases it is the water valve that feeds water to the ice maker well. The valve is energized by the ice maker to fill for 7 seconds and then shut off promptly. The valve will many times dribble water into the well after shut off, causing an overflow problem. The fix is a new water valve kit. The only other possibility is the freezer temperature going above freezing from time to time, but is a rare problem.
check the fill tube for ice blockage.some times water will freeze in the tube and stop the water flow.also if the unit has a reset button on the ice make reset it a few times.and if tat does not change any thing check the fill valve and water supply line.last thing too do is replace the ice maker
your freezer had a heater and a bi metal behind its pannel. if they won't work properly than you would face problem like this.......contact your service authority. it cannot be solved by your own
Ice maker was intermittent at best - ice was often just a shell. After
two failures to correct we had the ice maker (a Whirlpool - on a Sub
Zero - Go figure) replaced. Then the paddle that detects the ice level
broke. Next step a new GE.
Check water turned on. check ice button switch turned on in fridge. remove juice storage, ice container in freezer, check ice bucket full white plastic flapper to make sure not stuck on a white peg at top. flapper must hang down and be freely movable to signal ice maker to keep busy. If up high will turn off ice maker. Lots of other parts especially heater circuits involved also: fill tube supply heater not working then frozen supply line then no ice. Look for wiring diagram in ziplock behind compressor grille. can order parts at repairclinic.com. logical design, layout, easy to get to sensors, heaters. makes sense if look at it long enough.
When my repair tech came out, he showed me that the fill tube sometimes retracts toward the rear of the freezer. He simply pulled it forward with a pair of needle nose pliers until it rested in the delivery reservoir. This placement allows the detector to know when the tray is full and shut off; thus not overfilling the freezing tray and/or splashing additional water onto the freezer wall and into the ice cube drawer.
