When i turn my dishwasher on, it sounds as though it is going to work but suddenly stops after about 1 second. You can hear what sounds like the motor beginning to kick in and then it stops and you hear a quick swoosh of water if you put your ear to the base of the dishwasher. I have checked for power, cleaned the filter inside and tried the tip on how to start a stalled dishwasher but it is still not working. I have had the dishwasher out and unscrewed various parts of it to try and get to the motor but was afraid to go any further in case i forgot how to put everything back together again. Have you any suggestions or will i have to get a repairman out. Thanks.

Hi WE give this answer in good faith that anybody who benefits from
it will make a donation to COMIC RELIEF, because I've just fixed my
smeg d/w which is a great relief and no joke when not working, SO DONATE. My dishwasher tried to start but would not ,it tried but could not, the panel showed no fault.
The fault was caused by the failure of the solinoid (electric magnet)
which opens the soap dispenser mechanism, located inside the door. I
used an electric light up screw drive (from £ shop) which glows when
you touch the end, to test the solioid, you could also use a multi
meter though not as reliable. We replace solinoid, (Common
solinoid from any appliance repair shop) but I note on ebay there is a
dishwasher guy selling the complete dispenser unit with new solinoid
fitted. Hope this helps( we have just had our first wash) Do not forget to donate Minnie Moon (twitter) P.S. Sorry I can not remember how to spell solinoid (electro magnet)

If it is 13 years old, it has most likely reached its end of life--whatever the cause, something has malfunctioned. However, a service technician would probably be able to advise.
It sounds as though the Anti-flood device has kicked in,could be due to a leak under the dishwasher,it will need to be pulled out and investigated.
I would also check that there is water at the hose to the machine.
Has the water drained by the time the dishwasher powers off?
The clicking sound is probably the (failed) pump motor and will require a service call or replacement of the unit.
I had the same problem with the exact same model - put your washer on the lowest wash setting - press and hold the start button for about 3 seconds. THe washer will run for about 5 seconds and then turn off (do not have the heated dry setting on when you do this).
Turn it off (turn the dial), and then try to re-wash.

turn the valves to the left if there the screw in type or parraell if the quick open type the first thing a dishwasher does when you start it is drain for a few minutes then stops then fills with hot water run the water as hot at the sink as you can before starting the washer there is a float in the tub that can shut the water valve off if its not seated on the safety switch after the drain at the start of cycles stops then you should hear the water valve open and start the fill let me know and we will go from there
Our Asko D1796 dishwasher has the lights on the panel working as usual but you can't select a cycle and it won't turn on. We unplugged the pipe. If we turn it off and wait for 12+ hours we have gotten it to work twice.
the problem is the circulation motor needs to be loosen up take a 5'16 driver open the filter on the bottom and loosen it at froom thr small hole on the left.
It sound as a control board problem.
you may be able to get it tested, and if faulty, get a re-worked (repaired one) much cheaper than a new one.
Good luck!
