AcerPower 1000 -- VERY slow loading

This computer belongs to my 10-year-old son and recently crashed (cause unknown). I did a complete system restore (Windows XP) and the computer is fully operational but when loading/installing software, or data files, it is impossibly slow. Using DVDFab, loading a DVD film to the hard drive took almost 6 hours to complete on the Acer -- the same movie loads on my nothing-special 2005 HP desktop in a matter of minutes.

Where do I begin to diagnose the problem?

Thanks.

Thanks for the response. Actually I misspoke: I did a system recovery, not a system restore. And I'm doing another system recovery again right now, and it's taking an eternity. The system backup is stored on 2 DVDs. It's been an hour already and the first DVD is only 25% loaded.

Your potential problem might be a virus. If you are having an updated anti-virus software and are running regular scans and found nothing, Then this might be the problem, while making the system get restored, the frequent problem is that, xp doesn't load the drivers which you installed for your system and it loads its own drives (which sometimes won't go with your devices). Try installing the drivers (especially display and motherboard drivers). If this doesn't work, I better suggest that you do a complete format of the system and install windows xp afresh.. Then there should be no problem. These're the possible solutions which i can infer from the details you've given..

Don't trash that computer! Restore it!

Just because a computer slows down and or starts having errors does not mean it's ready for the trash. I talk to several people a week who have problems out of a computer that is only a year or two old, and rather than getting it repaired they go out and spend another $500 to $600 to replace it.
Many Computer Service companies now offer Computer Restoration Services where the computer operating system is reloaded, clean the dust from the inside of the computer, and load the most up to date drivers. Then the computer runs like when when it was new, or even faster. That service usually runs around $150. That is a savings of over $350.
The service mentioned above does not include replacing bad hardware, I have found that most issues are caused by bad configuration or Operating System corruption not hardware. Computer Restoration service will take care of both of those issues.
These days we all have to save money every where we can. So don't trash that year or two old computer! Restore it!

My pc was very slowly running

Your machine is old, there's not much you can do. Remove any programs you don't use, stop programs from starting-up with the OS, and increase your RAM: http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx

To Whom it may concern: MY GOAL IS TO BLOW AWAY THE ENTIRE DELL VOSTRO 1000 INTERNAL DISK AND REIMAGE USING ORIGINAL CD'S SENT WITH ORIGINAL PURCHASE. BACKGROUND: Wife's PC was running slow and I...

Start the computer.
Select the "old" system, and then repeatedly press F8,
until you see the Windows Start-Up Menu (white text over a black background).
Choose Start In Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
At the command-prompt, enter 'FORMAT C:' to "wipe" 100% of the files from the disk-drive.
When it completes, turn the computer off.
Turn the computer on, and boot from those original "System Restore" CDs.
It will load Windows onto your now-empty disk-drive.

My 13 year old son laptop need be reset like new

There are a couple possible solutions to your problem. If the computer will still turn on and load windows, and I assume you are using Windows XP, you can try doing a system restore. To do this, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and select System Restore. If system restore is enabled, you should be able to choose a date in the past when the laptop was working properly and restore the computer to that date. If you want to completely reload windows, you will need a Windows XP installation disc. Load the disc in the CD or DVD player and reboot the computer. You should see a screen asking you to press any key to boot from CD, go ahead and press Enter. You will now enter setup where you can reformat the hard drive and reload windows XP. Follow the on-screen instructions to delete any old partitions, and then create a new partition and format it using NTFS. The windows XP installation will continue after the hard drive is formatted. If, when you reboot the computer with the installation disc in the drive, you are not prompted to boot from CD, you may need to reboot and press F2 or F12 to change the boot selection to the CD or DVD drive so it will load the CD first before it tries to load your original Windows installation.

How to restor windows

first of all why are you seeking to restore windows?? if it is because you want to restore all settings well just go to:

START>ALLPROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOL>SYSTEM RESTORE

then select the date of which you want to restore your installation..

but if you want to restore your windows because of a recent crash or recent virus activity i would not recommend doing so cause it would be only a tempoary solution, that the problem would arise again sooner or later, a complete re-format would be a good choice

After downloading a game for my son onto his computer he recieved a message that the application crashed. What does this mean? How is it fixed? He is quite upset and I don't know what to do

mostlly this happens when you downloaded a corrupt file, anyway let see if we can fix it using the restore mode, if you're already familiar with it try to restore it using the date before the game was installed if not follow these instruction.

1. upon bootup press "F8" and wait for the option that lets you select some option such as safe mode, safemode with networking, etc, etc,

2. select the "safe mode", your pc will load with only minimal option a popup box will appear asking if you're going to use restore mode. (if your pc crashes before it loads the system stop rigth here, your system needs to be reformat, otherwise pls proceed)

3. click "START", "Program", "Accessories", "System Tools", and then "System restore"

4.popup box will appear select ok or continue until you reach the calendar option that will let you select the date you want to restore in an earlier time, pls select the date before you install the game ex. you install the game on 10/15/09, then select the 10/14/09 or later then select ok or continue until it reaches finish.

5. reboot the pc, this should solve your problem
