Dell PC with XP DVD s wont read but CD s play

Dell PC running XP, DVD's wont play but CD s play. Message when DVD inserted is "insert disc"

    Definitely a DVD drive. Haven't used for months. Roxio Creator MyDVD Plus. Device Manager indicates it is working. Troubleshoot no help. Plays CD's but prompts to insert disc when DVD is inserted.

    i have a dell xps 400 cd dvd burner. ive been tring to burner cds and dvds, it telling me that is it not reading my disc to put an new one inside in other words. i just recently got my computer restore what sould i do

    can you check if you use DVD ROM or it's just a CD ROM

I guess you have to clean your ROM (since you have'nt used it for months). You may try cleaning it with an ordinary DVD cleaner, if this doesn't solve the issue, maybe try considering a new one.

    i think you may try considering a new one. If it is a DVD ROM, a cleaner should work with it or else its defective.

I had the same problem. Discovered that the drive was CD only. I think "raph quintos" has the right idea.

Multi-session options are usually reserved/possible for re-writable discs only, not ordinary writeable discs.

Dvr cd drive won't play cds get message asking to insert a disc when one is already inserted
Your cd drive is damage, the laser head or the spindle is not functioning and is not reading the disc thus causing the message of no cd being insert to appear, however the cd-drive power is still working which the computer is able to still detect, but like I said earlier the spindle/laser head is malfuction. You will need to replace the entire cd rom drive. If you don't know how to replace it, an external cd/dvd drive will also do the job.

The issue is due to the driver corruption. You need not worry, there is a simple solution for this.

Go to device manage --> right click on your CD/DVD drive and then click uninstall and then restart your computer. Do not keep any CDs while you do this. Just try this out.

DVD drive cannot recognize DVD disk, but can read other CDs
I'm assuming you have tried a different dvd also and no joy, but it may need a lens clean or it is unable to read dvd anymore as the tracks are closer together than a cd and the alignment of the laser is faulty. Notebook roms are replaceable but only mainly from your notebook manufacturer. You could also use an external dvd writer via usb, although this then doesn't make your notebook as portable, if you need to read a dvd disc.
