My Mac takes a long time betwen orders

This is a very unusual symptom of hardware failure. One or more of the following might be the cause.

The ribbon cable to the display has worked loose or its connection has otherwise become interrupted. This seems the most likely; most other problems would at least show a "gray" screen during startup.

The GPU (graphics card) has come loose or (very unlikely) has died.

If you (or someone you trust) are not comfortable opening it up and checking for loose connections, you can try taking it in to an Apple store for assessment, but this model is considered "vintage" and no longer supported.

From the factory, this Mac has a 750 GB (SATA drive. This is not a SSD).

It is possible to replace it with an SSD, but it takes some time. Search ifixit.com if you're interested.

not seeing start up disc.

Try restting pram or nvram is also called.

hold down apple key, option key and the letters p and r and then push power button. These four keys must be pressed and held down continuously before the first chime and until you hear the third chime.

if that does not work, try going to google and doing a search for apple key commands in apple support. I think holding down the option key before pushing power button on a machine that is powered off will take you to the drive select menu. where you can choose the drive you want to start form.


YOu can also try installing system disk and hold down c key. Go into disk utilities and run all four choices.

Try the standard start the laptop holding option and command and p and r (and hear that boot sound twice or three times; note that it gets louder)--this clears any info the laptop might be holding onto, like "I'm suspended with a blank screen". You can also unscrew the bottom plate and disconnect the battery, hit the power button to clear any residual power, reconnect the battery and screw back the plate (or maybe you just have a battery door to simplify!); then, maybe it boots, but I suspect...

...you screen is bad (since your hear the boot sound); to test: assuming your TV has an HDMI port, get a miniDP to HDMI cable (e.g. under $15 via Amazon slash dp slash B00APLKGA8); then physically connect, then change the input on your TV and hope there's a picture (e.g. your desktop background)--if you can't see anything, unplug and replug the thunderbolt/miniDP connector (or borrow any good laptop and verify you can see it on your TV)...

Assuming it's out of warranty (otherwise, you should be at the store already!), so pay $ to your nearest Apple store, or (for the brave) buy the part (hoping LCD panel; i.e. your TV saw a signal), and see repair guides via ifixit dot com (just note the super fine print on the bottom of your laptop; you'll need your Model No; A1286 or to do some searching).

1. Verify startup process passes initial memory checks and POST (Power On Self-Test) with no beeping sounds or flashing sleep LED. Check video activity.
2. Disconnect any peripherals and Ethernet cable.
3. Reset SMC using the procedure for your computer.
4. Reset PRAM by holding down Command-Option-P-R keys while restarting, until you hear the startup sound for the second time.
5. Start up from known-good original system media or an up-to-date, bootable Mac OS X volume.
6. Run Disk Utility or check Mac Resource Inspector (MRI) results to verify SMART status of the your hard drive.

It sounds like your imac really requires a tuneup. You can do this using an application which can be downloaded for free from http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx select the version for your OS e.g. Snow Leopard, Lion etc. It is worth backing up up your machine first before running it. Start it up and it will first check the smart status of your hard drive then it will verify the startup volume (this can take a minute or so) click on the automation tab after reading the warning page. check under maintenance (repairs permissions and execute maintenance scripts) under rebuilding click on LaunchServices and Display of Folders' contents, under cleaning check all the boxes. And then click on execute. As it says this will take some time, possibly up to an hour, don't worry it will be worth it in the end. Once it is finished it will come up with restart or shutdown, press restart. Hope this helps.
