Which way do you turn the dial for changing temperature control to make it quit freezing all our food

Our Maytag msd 2556 has started freezing all the produce in the veggie drawers and some stuff along the wall adjacent to the freezer. We can't seem to figure out which way to turn the temp control knob and it doesn't say warmer or colder. Do we go up or do we go down ?

Hello Kimberly,

Two days late... (sorry)...
I'm and old guy: Wormer (off) is counter-clockwise...
Very COLD... is right, clock-wise (high numbers)).

But HOLD ON A SECOND...
(it can take 3 days, 72 hours for a modern
refrigerator to stabilize (off the truck)).

Take a moment and REFLECT back ... trying
to REMEMBER the settings BEFORE everything
went WRONG (write those setting down).

Over cooling in the refrigerator section is usually
NOT a serious trouble... MOST COMMONLY it
is the result of your FROZEN FOOD area being
over-stuffed... Look closely at your spacing...
PARTICULARLY against the FREEZERS back
wall
...

IF the FREEZING air there CANNOT circulate
vertically... the FREEZING AIR will be forced into
the refrigeration area... (only a couple of degrees
(resulting in food/beverage issues)).

IDEALLY your refrigerator is operating just
IMMEDIATELY above FREEZING... keeping
your milk and/or ice coffee right at CRIPSY
cold... but not wounding your produce...

IF...
The FREEZING air cannot circulate freely in
the FREEZER AREA ... only a degree or two will
solidify your beverages and ruin your produce.

The first thing you want to do is RESTORE your
ORIGINAL SETTINGS...

Check the FREEZER air-flow...

When the panic/anger subsides... consider spending
$6 each on REFRIG/FREEZER thermometers....

I love refrigeration... Please use me as a resource.
I have quite a few suggestions: depending on your
issues... But the first thing I would need you to
assure me: there is room for FRIGID air to
circulate (that's what is all about)

Taylor Precision Products Classic Series Large Dial Thermometer Freezer...

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: do higher numbers on dial mean colder temperature?

Yes,That's how far open the airway is for the compartment. So the higher the number, the bigger the opening, the colder the compartment.

Sounds like the thermostat or control has broken in the fridge coompartment. You will need to call a service engineer to fix it or risk getting ill.

NOTE: This
is a multi-solution answer since I don't have all the tech from your question to pinpoint your problem
But the solution is in here generically, if you read and study the solutions very, very carefully.
First I would check cold control. Thats where you turn it off, if your temp is not warm. it can
be defective and not shutting off. If your temp is warm proceed with the following.
I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if FREEZER CONTROL is turned WARMER WHICH MAKES THE REF COLDER AND VICE-VERSA. SEE?
The ref. temp should be about 33-35
The Freezer temp should be 0 to 10 Any thing below these temps is overkill and a waste of elect
The higher the number you turn it up to is the coldest
But is probably a common defrost problem The ice build up
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath
Make sure back cover is on the fridge. Some take them off and throw them away.
make one out of cardboard if its gone, using the holes of the old one.

Fridge/freezer leaks water

This is not very common. If you get water coming out of the ICE maker when you press the WATER dispenser, then the thing I would check first is the solenoid controlled water valve. It might be sending water out both legs at the same time. BUT if you have had work done on it lately, I would suspect that someone didn't get the electrical leads onto the control board correctly.

How can I get into the cut-on settings of refrigerator

Hello,

Purchase an appliance thermometer that is specifically made for refrigerators and freezers. These special thermometers were made to withstand cold temperatures and provide an accurate reading when exposed to such temperatures.

2Place the appliance thermometer in a glass of water.

3Set the glass of water with the thermometer in the refrigerator on the middle shelf.

4Check the temperature on the appliance thermometer after 24 hours.
The temperature should register between 37 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit (2 and 4 degrees Celsius) in order to store food safely.
Only barely above freezing -- say 34 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) is even better for food storage at the cost of slightly higher electricity consumption. But check that food is not slowly freezing in any part of the refrigerator, which could make it less palatable.

5Look for the temperature control dial inside the refrigerator if you have to adjust the temperature, and make it warmer or cooler.
If you can't easily see the control dial, check the owner's manual for a diagram that shows the location.
When looking at the refrigerator temperature dial, you may see numbers rather than degrees. The majority of refrigerators use a set of numbers, with the lower numbers representing cooler temperatures and the higher numbers representing warmer temperatures.

6Move the temperature dial in the necessary direction to adjust the temperature up or down. Be sure to move the dial only one number in either direction because it probably will not take much to change the temperature in the refrigerator.

7Adjust the temperature balance control if your refrigerator has such a dial or sliding switch. This allows you to direct more or less cold air to the refrigerator section from the freezer section.

8Wait at least 24 hours, and then check the refrigerator temperature again.

9Observe the amount of frost in the freezer section of the refrigerator if you are unable to properly set the temperature.

10Defrost the freezer if the amount of frost is more than .25 inches (.64 cm) thick.

11Repeat the steps as necessary until the temperature is within the safe range.

12Use a permanent marker to draw a line on the dial after you locate the best setting on the refrigerator temperature dial. This will give you a reference point in case your dial moves and needs to be adjusted in the future.

Hope this help in solving the problem....

Maytag Performa fridge has stopped making ice -- I changed the water filter to make sure that wasn't the problem. The water in the door works fine and there is plenty of pressure in the water line but the...

First, I'm not a Maytag tech.
Check your warranty. You should call Maytag/Sears for service.
*** The following is for information only.**
* I've had this problem a lot with my old fridge. Water line works but no ice.
* Check if the "Ice Full" leaver is in the down (no ice) position. Some ice makers will lock the leaver (a stiff wire) in the full position to manually shut off ice maker. Make sure it swings up and down when ice tray is empty.
* Sometimes when the tray is left full of ice for a week or more then the tube feeding water will freeze up. Defrosting the freezer on a regular basis will help. A quick fix is to pour warm water in the ice maker section (where the ice is formed). This will help melt the clogged pipe and also make some ice while your waiting. You may have to do this several times. But at least you have ice.
* This (freezing up) may also be caused by the freezer set too cold. The temperature dial should be in the middle. But turning it colder and colder over time will cause ice to build up and prevent foods from freezing properly (thus turning the dial down colder.) Once your maxed out on the dial. You will find the freezer gets warm and things get covered in frost crystals.
* Transfer food to another refrigerator and perform a complete defrost by leaving it unplugged and the door open (freezer section).
* Frequently check and dump water at bottom of fridge. Clean the dust on coils while down there.
* A fan blowing into the freezer section helps. (Do NOT use a heated fan as it will warp the plastic and overpressure the refrigerate.)
* Once defrosted (+4 hours). Power up the freezer and set the temperature dial to mid point and the freezer diverter to middle or normal setting. Don't put the food back in yet. Wait till the freezer gets down to normal freeze temp (about 0 to 10F)
* Move freezer back in place (if you moved it to access plug) then slowly put back the food. Try not to cram stuff in. Leave space for air to flow freely around items.
* Final, Call for service anyway and have them perform yearly service. Check your warranty.
