Just bought a Acer Aspire, my old computer and I mean old, I just shut it down, but I know this is not good for the machines, when I log off on this new one, the blue light stays on the keyboard and the mouse laser light stays on, is this normal, could you tell step by step how to log off and what stays on. Thank you
Logging off does not shut down the pc, you want to eaither standby (sleep mode) or shut down.
If you running windows vista you would press the start button on the bottom left corner, select the little arror next to the lock and power icons and then select eaither shut down or sleep (sleep mode will still use some power and drain your batter but will turn on mutch faster when you need to use the laptop again)
If you are going to have the laptop off for more then a few hours you should just shut down unless you are leaving it plugged in to the ac adapter.
If you log off you only close your user session under windows, not turn off the computer.
If you suspend you turn off almost everything in the laptop like hardwire, cd or dvdrom and most peripherals but the computer stays on the consuming power.
If you hibernate what windows does is to store all in memory in a temporary file in the hard drive and turn off all the computer so when you turn it on again it will be as you last session with all your programs and documents you left open.
And if you turn off the computer it will close all your programs, close windows and turn off all the hardware.

Hi there,
Try flashing the BIOS of your machine by downloading the update from the website of your computer manufacturer.
If that does not work other troubleshooting steps to try are:
1. Use a known good working adapter from another laptop that matches yours.
2. Try another battery.
Hope this helps!
That's often the sign of a worn-out or defective battery. They appear to charge but don't store enough energy to work. It's also possible the motherboard's power circuit isn't working. The only way to know for sure is to have a known good battery as a test, or to try your battery in another computer. If your computer works with a good test battery, or your battery causes another computer to shut down, you know you need a new battery. If the trouble continues with a good test battery, you'll need to have the computer serviced.
that means the drivers which you had installed is not working properly. u need to download the drivers of audio video & NIC card .
check out the site. support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.htm. make sure you have SP3 for XP.
#1: Shut down your computer. You must first shut your computer down toinitiate the factory restore.#2: Start up your computer and as the computer logo appears (such as Dell orHP) hit "Ctrl>F11" simultaneously. This may be different fordifferent machines, but the most common keys to hit are"Ctrl>F11." If this does not work, the F8 key has been said towork for certain machines. #3: Select "Repair My Computer" from the list of menu options thatappear and press "Enter." #4: Choose the language settings that you would like and then click enter. #5: Enter the administrator log in and password if it asks you for thisinformation. #6: Choose the factory reset option. This should reset your computer to thefactory settings when you bought your machine.

Turn on the computer, and as soon as it it on, keep on tapping F8 key until you see a black screen with white text. Choose the Last Known Good Configuartion option.
You should go to the BIOS and load the default settings. Also, check your device manager to check if all hardware is installed and functioning properly (no conflicts, etc).
