If it doesn't show up at all under "Computer" go into "Disk Management" Right click Computer > Manage > DIsk Management.
If it is missing in here then the card is bad. It it shows up here, initialize it if it asks to, otherwise right click the card and add new Simple Volume.
If you see it under "Computer" and when you try to traverse it and it asks to format disk. Format it. This happens when the MFT record on the SD card is corrupt and formatting it will fix it.

If the 8Gb SD card works on your HD camera, then the problem is with your built in memory card of your computer. Most of the built in memory cards of the computer only supports up to 2Gb.
You can actually isolate it by trying to test an SD card lower than 8Gb to your computer.
Solution for this is to use external USB SD reader that supports high capacity SD card (SDHC) or contact the manufacturer of your computer and ask for firmware updates for the memory card reader. Hope this is clear and would help you.

Start up a computer with
Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. Insert the SD card into an external memory
card reader or into the computer's built in card reader. If it the first time a
SD card has been inserted into the computer, Windows will recognize the SD card
and automatically install drivers to read the memory card.
Go to the computer
view by clicking on the windows start menu icon in the bottom right corner of
the computer. In Windows 7 and Vista click "Computer". In Windows XP
click "My Computer"
Right click on the
SD drive under the computer heading. A dialog box with different options for
the drive will appear. Click on "Format" to bring up the formatting
dialog box.
Select the type of
formatting (also known as file system format). In Windows XP or Vista there are
several choices including FAT, FAT 32, and NTFS. In Windows 7 there is an added
choice called exFAT formatting. This is an improved FAT formatting type with improved
meta data capabilities. Choose the formatting type, name if the drive if
desired, check or uncheck the "quick format" option, and press the
"Start" button. When the SD card format is
complete Windows will provide a notification.
