1996 Sony 32" Trinitron - Suddenly lost picture and sound
Never had a problem. Set was on and suddenly went dead as if the set had just been turned off. No response from TV panel or remote. I've reviewed similiar situations on the knowledge board and it seems as if my first response should be to check the internal fuse. Any suggestions would be helpful

Re:
The most common problem with TV was the failure of the Horizontal Output Transistor, this will also damage 2 transistors in the power supply and a resistor in the power supply also. (From memory): Horizontal Output location # Q501, 2 power supply transistors Locations Q601, Q602, and resistor Location R607. Also solder the Horizontal drive transformer, you can find it by following the circuit board from the base of the Horizontal output. Some models used an IC instead of the 2 transistors in the powersupply, it will have six legs and check like 2 transistors. Good Luck.

In time as the Sony Trinitron ages it begins to have power issues. While this can be true of most tube televisions it's the rate and severity at which this happens to Trinitrons that makes it particularly of note. Many Trinitron owners have complained of the Trinitron set turning itself off randomly and frequently. Some sets have failed to stay on for longer than a few minutes at a time. Eventually some sets will not turn on at all. These problems grow more severe with age.
Check the power cable running from the Sony Trinitron 32. Make sure the cable is completely inserted into the power connection on the rear of the TV as well as the local power outlet.
Disconnect the power cable from the electrical outlet, then plug it into a different connection. It is possible to electrical outlet has died, forcing you to obtain a power current from a different source.
Check the cable connection running from the cable/satellite receiver or VCR. If the TV is on but no picture is on the screen, the problem is most likely due to a connection issue.
Power off the cable/satellite receiver, then press the "Video" button on the remote control to switch the Trinitron 32 to the video input signal. Turn on the cable/satellite receiver and the programming now loads onto the television screen.
2 things that will cause that vertical IC or Yoke! Listen to this one went on service call 2wks ago Customer had a 50 INCH1988 pioneer big screen replaced 3 capacitors resolder poor connections TV is now working like New ?
Maybe you put magnet near to your TV or something that can produce magnetism.... if not the deguassing system is not functioning anymore. .. bring your unit to near service in your place.
heard a pop sound -- then the set went dead -- no lights, no nothing, and then there was a slight electrical burn smell coming from the back of the set :(
sony has problem with bad picture tubes as well as flyback transformers .if you have shorted hori output then replace it if set shorts it out again your looking at bad flyback transformer as well as maybe leaky tube.
Something shorted and shut your set down. Most likely the high voltage transformer shorted which also shorted the horizontal output transistor.
