My Dell notebook battery has 5 led's and a small tab (button) you press to see how much charge the battery has in it. Take yours out and look.

A small battery is used on main board to maintain the clock and normally is supposed lasting many years (5/7) You must change it when date and time on your PC start loosing synchronicity.

The small one inside is for saving the BIOS data and the Internal Clock as just like in a regular desktop. That shouldnt need replacing unless its just very old. But even if the internal battery goes bad, it should still charge and work.

If the charge light isnt comming on, then its most likely the mother board went bad or the battery. Power it on and when in windows, right click on the desktop, click Properties.

Go to the screen saver tab and at the bottom, click the power options, go to the battery and see if its even detecting it. If it doesnt detect it at all, its probably a bad mother board or connector. Even a dead battery would show.

Dell c640 battery not charging

If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced. Rechargeable batteries will fail if stored in a discharged state for long periods.

Occasionally a defective battery will show charge and not work at all. HP has the same problem on some models. Try a different battery and if it works, then the battery is defective.

New battery and still won't charge.

first, check that the battery connection isn't blocked by a sticker or something.
second: try disconnecting the battery and ac and hold the power button for 1 minute. then give the battery and ac another try.

let us know how it goes.

if it still doesn't work, time for a warranty replacement.

Try taking out your hard disk plug in power, if it works, hard disk is faulty. If not,
Try taking out memory card, if there's a sound, memory card faulty. If no sound, it's your motherboard that is causing the error.

Note: If machine is under warranty no need to pay for the repairs.

Dell c640 charging problems.

Instead of spending alot of time trying to do something that could potentially harm your laptop..why not just buy a power supply?

You can get one here Click here for about 16 dollars. That's a great deal they are usually about $60 and its a Dell brand not some off brand.

Good Luck

I think you are wasting a lot of effort, I know how you feel and sometimes you cannot win.
Junk it for parts.

Dell c640 not charging battery

I have found a few things with this model, first if the laptop works on ac power when the battery is out then try pushing the button on the battery itself and see how many lights light up. If they are not green replace the battery it just wore out. Second if you can wiggle the power cord and you see the charge light flash on and off then the solder joints are cracked on the main board and you will have to take the main board out of the case and drill out the 3 rivets on the metal bracket covering the plug and bend it out of the way then there are a small brown and a small black block near the plug resolder the ends of these facing the plug. bend the bracket back into place and epoxy it where it was. put the main board back in the case hook all the stuff back up and now it will charge your battery. If you are not good at this stuff I would not try it yourself. I have fixed 2 c640s this way and it is slow careful work.
