This monitor does not have built-in speakers. It looks like you will need to use external speakers for your audio.

SOURCE: how to check the backlight life of my hp l1706

Claimed life for the lamp is 50,000 Hours, but in real life, no way to tell. You can look here what is failed in the backlight lamps, it can be from worn out (blacken ends is one sign of bad lamps, same as home fluorescent lamp), poor soldering works on the lamps. see pictures here: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
What is the problem with your monitor anyway?

Help My HP L1706 17" LCD Monitor seems to have a Yellowish/Greenish tint on the screen, How do i sort this problem so that my screen is back to normal setting?

With the price of monitors these days, you can pick up a 19" new for less than 100. Or you can find them used for 50. I would replace it, but if you want to keep it, the go to HP web site and get an user manuel and try to adjust the settings.

Dear Sir, I have installed Ubuntu Studio 10. Display card Intel 82915/GV/910 GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 04) with HP L1706 17" LCD monitor which just supports 1024 X 768 resolution with...

that is what happens using new pc, new os. like linux
and then using old monitor ! welcome to PnP H3LL

1024 reso is very very old. we long ago exceed this era.
both MS and linux do not try to support the old dead no longer supported by makers, monitors.
try to imagine how many different monitors were made in last 30 years. vast.
then try to support the ones not supported now.
you do know the HP does not support 10 year old products right?
so knowing that one fact, how can Ubuntu...
study the limits of PnP, plug and play, its great but not magic,
it cant pull rabbits (dead) out of hats, now.
Btw, Walfart has new monitor for $46 , that works pnp.
ever consider a cheap upgrade?

now the real place to ask, not here.at fixya (guess yah)

I cant get rid of osd lockout on screen and the monitor wont turn off

Press and hold the menu button for 10 seconds. If that doesnt work, it might be time to get a new monitor. This model of monitor was notorious for having a problem with the menu keypad and buttons sticking causing the lockout.

L1706 monitor power light flashes green/amber

A flashing power light often means the monitor isn't getting a signal. When you turn the monitor off and back on, do you see the brand logo for a few seconds? Try plugging it into a different computer to see if it comes on.

If plugging it into another computer doesn't work, it may be a bad power circuit in the monitor. A common problem with monitors is the capacitors going bad. If you're handy with a soldering iron, you can try replacing them yourself. Look here for pictures and instructions: Fix an LCD Monitor

Volume pop up in the middle of my screen

no photos of said window presented? i cant see them?
must be OSD? the monitor brain on screen display (menu)?
even with the DVI cable pulled?
only a monitor stated, w1907, no PC
some monitors have button lock
read the manual ?oops HP deleted it...
it tells you to push the menu key on the monitor for 10 seconds
and it unlocks. (4 buttons right side left button is MENU)
doom?
that power deal sounds super bad, like the power supply is bad.
if the monitor fails by its self not plugged it to a PC
then the monitors is bad.
try a reset on it? ( power off for 1hr, or off then plug in with power button held? or power on with menu held (wild guesses but common practice)
ok found your manual page 4-8 shows menu page advanced
list line in list factory reset.
but if the keys are dead, and power lamp failing
the power supply is no good or worse. worse is always possible.
and expensive

ever see the support page, read the guides
?

its over 10 years old now. 2007?
walmart has larger one for $50
cheaper that parts or repair this.... vastly

HP L1706- screen is blank when I switch on

First if you have a extra monitor try to plug it in and see if it works. If not then check your video card. or get into the computer and try and remove and reseat the memory. Sometimes by just doing that can solve the problems
