Quick background... Ive had this mic for a while, and have used it on both a phantom power converter and a tascam mixer with no problems. With both sources i have used an xlr-xlr to the phantom power source, then an xlr-1/4" jack to my computer and all worked fine. The old tascam m-50 mixer i had been using was just too big and ridiculous, so i got rid of it and have had the mic put away for a while now. Recently i purchased another phantom power converter (Micropower PS400). Xlr-xlr from mic to the converter, and xlr-1/4" jack from converter to computer, just like always. And now i have no sound. At this point I guess my question is whats the most likely source of the problem? Mic has gone south? Possibly bad cables? Or just a bad fresh out of the box phantom power converter? And just for the dummy sake yes everything is plugged in properly, 48v selected, and the computers input source is enabled and working properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Justin
From the Micropower PS400 product description it states:
"routes the microphone signal to a mixer or a microphone preamplifier."
• these is just a phantom power supply.
One reason your former setup is OK , is that
tascam m-50 is a mixer preamplifier.
• phantom power supply is just a part of the mic preamp of the mixer
to power up your mxl 990 condenser mic
• What you may need is something like these:
X2u XLR to USB Signal Adapter
Ive been using this mic for about 7 years now with no problems which is why this is boggling my mind so bad. But way back when i first got the mic, and before i had the mixer, I just used an Audio Technica phantom power supply (i believe it was the AT8801). I ran the same setup as now with no problems... XLR-XLR from mic to 48v supply, and XLR-1/4" jack from power supply to computer. No preamp or anything and the mic worked fine

The MXL 990s requires 48 volts to operate. If your mixer does not have a phantom power option, you will need to purchase a microphone pre-amplifier with phantom power to interface the microphone to your mixer.

Professional condensor type mikes require a phantom power source to work. That will be a balanced (read XLR) connection from source to preamp and the preamp must be capable of supplying the power. These units cannot be used in an unbalanced circuit (like 1/4" or computer mini-pin). Your best bet for the setup would be to get an external power supply box that can also convert the signal from balanced to unbalanced. That would be what the mike plugs into and then that plugs into the computer. You're probably looking at about 50-100 for even a cheap one that will work well. Companies like Sweetwater and B&H should be able to steer you toward a decent basic unit. If you happen to have a mixer (which is why you bought the good mike) then it may have phantom power for some of its mike inputs.

It might just be a sound setting on your computer that is holding you up.
Go to START
SETTINGS
CONTROL PANEL
SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES
Then VOICE tab and see if your mic is selected as the VOICE RECORDING - DEFAULT DEVICE.
Just one more thing you can try, hope it's at least a little helpful.
Good luck.

Ok I appreciate the ideas so far but please read my full description before posting. My computers sound settings are right and are working correctly, I have tried other sources (i.e. guitar) to verify that. And i do have a 48v phantom power supply, as stated in my above description
