I have a Philips 32" flat screen HD ready TV. When the TV is hooked up to my Sky HD box I cant change the aspect ratio thru the HDMI link; I have to switch to the SCART link if I want to watch a non-HD channel that is broadcasting in anything less than 16:9.
In your philips menu there is an option to turn of your auto aspec ratio to OFF then using your sky remote go to services, 4 then picture and ensure that this is set to 16:9
Job done

SOURCE: Bravia & Sky+HD, aspect problem
There is nothing wrong with you Sony Bravia TV and it suppport all HD and SD formats.
Are you viewing the HD version of the channel when it is showing a standard defination show. e.g SKY1 HD instead of SKY1.
This means that regular standard defination shows are in a 4:3 ratio and does not fill the whole screen. In order to view these type of shows you will need to tune to regular channel instead of the HD version.
You can check if a show is brocast in HD by going into the tv guide and checking for the HD symbol in the programme symposis.
