The answer to your question depends on the radio model. Some radios have the capability when being programmed to have wide- or narrowband designated by channel. An example would be current model Motorola business/commercial radios such as the CP200.

Radios produced in the early 2000s were sometimes manufacturered in just one type of channel spacing. In these radios the entire radio is either wideband or narrowband.

In radios produced prior to 2000, most all were wideband only.

Instruction manual for the radius sp50 Motorola

Before spending much time on this radio, most SP50's will not meet the FCC regulations of Narrowband. We have recycled well over 200 now. Find a dealer, or you could email us with more information (what you want it to do, talk to, etc). There are a few things you are allowed to do with them and we have all the parts.

Cannot adjust volume

You possibly have a bad volume pot (potentiometer), or it is possible you are mixing narrowband and wideband radios together, and the narrowband radio is whispering to the wideband.

The volume pot is something which would be replaced during a radio repair. (Current 2014 pricing is around $85).

Low outgoing transmission volume

Check to see your radio and the other radios are the same as to narrowband and wideband. A narrowband channel spacing radio will talk more softly to other radios which remain on the older wideband channel spacing. In the USA, all radios (with a few exceptions) were required to change to narrowband by Jan. 2013.

Another problem which commonly occurs comes from something (tape, sticker or debris) covering the mic hole on the transmitting radio. Look at the face of your radio and try to determine where the mic hole is, and then check it for obstructions.

Lastly, you can check the setting of your Mic Gain on radios equipped with this user programmable feature. Generally this setting offers the numbers 1, 2, or 3. Experiment to see which setting is best for your voice type.

Frequency for Motorola MU24CVS UHF (4 Channels) 2-Way Radio

This radio has several available frequencies built into the unit:
1 - 464.5000
2 - 464.5500
3 - 467.7625 *
4 - 467.8125 *
5 - 467.8500
6 - 467.8750
7 - 467.9000
8 - 467.9250

You would need to read out each channel to determine what each of the 4 channels is programmed to. Reading out is easy on this unit. With the radio turned off, select the channel with the channel knob, then hold in the PTT button while turning the radio on, immediately it will tell you the frequency number, (if you want to change the freq you can use the PTT button to walk your way up through the numbers to the number you'd like), then if you press the monitor button it will lock in your chosen frequency and it will tell you the private line code (if zero it is turned off), then press the monitor button again to lock everything in. Do this on each channel and you will know how your 4 channel radio is programmed.

Note: This radio is a wideband radio and only a few were produced with narrowband capability. After Jan. 2013 you are required to use narrowband only in the USA. If your MU24 radio has two RED dots above the word Spirit it is narrowband on only frequencies 3 and 4. If your radio has no red dots on the label your radio is wideband only.

I need to know if my gm 300 is narrow band

Look at the model number. Following three alphabet letters it will have either the number "00" (narrowband) or the number "20" (wideband).

One quick question about narrow band compliancy? our agency uses a Motorola MTR 2000 repeater S/N 474czh0094, MOD. #T5766A 100W. Is this narrow band comliant? Thank you , Lt. Dave Gamache Yreka Police...

The MTR2000 repeater currently available is capable of narrowband (aka 12.5K channel spacing) and wideband (25K channel spacing).
Your serial number indicates your MTR2000 was manufactured in April 1999, which would be around the time narrowbanding began to come on the scene. The only way to know for certain is to have a dealer read out the repeater and see if it is programmed for narrowband. Most-likely it is.

Motorola xv1100 speaker low

The XTN radio is capable of both narrowband (12.5k) channel spacing and wideband (25k) channel spacing. If a radio is programmed to narrowband and another to wideband, one will transmit softly to the other, while the other transmits loudly back. If this were the cause of your problem, it is easy to resolve by reprogramming the radios to match one another. When in programming mode be certain when you get to the channel spacing step to choose the same word on each radio, either hi or lo.

If this does not solve your problem, you are experiencing another issue we commonly see in the repair facility. It is called low receive audio. This is repairable in most cases.

You might wonder what causes this problem. We most often see it when the end-user runs at full volume for long periods of time. Cut back the volume a little bit and you might save your radio from the repair shop.
