I have a locked rotor fault message.

The generator will not start and the display reads locked rotor. What should I be checking? Have already checked the battery and connections.

I had this fault show this morning. Very alarming, as we have a typhoon coming theough tomorrow!

Turned out to be an easy fix. When I hit start the solenoid engaged but nothing moved. Then I saw the fault message and thought "Large $$$$!"

It was just a bad 12 Volt battery, and when it couldn't crank it threw the fault code. I replaced the battery, pulled the 3 fuses on the control panel (mine is the 20 Kw model), and the codes cleared, and she fired right up.

The advice here and on a couple other sites about powering down the panel to clear fault codes saved me a lot of time, money and aggravaion, not to mention a freezer full of food (knowing the Guam Power Authority, and knowing typhoons, the power WILL go down tomorrow.

By the way, the battery showed 14.1 volts, but apparently lacked the amperage to crank that big boy.

I also panicked at the sight of the locked rotor. I shut off the battery charger circuit breaker, checked the battery voltage and sure enough it was under 11 volts. Replaced battery and good as new right before a Noreaster. Kohler 20KW. Thanks for the tip would of never thought to check the battery.

SOURCE: My 18RESL Kohler Propane Generator ran for 8.5

You have to reset it because it locked out on on under frequency. Just pullout the fuse on the control panel and then reinstall it a couple of seconds later. Now it will reset the fault codes. Hope that helps.

I have a 18RESA Kohler Generator that I keep getting a locked Rotor code warning. I clear it and then try to restart and it comes up again. The battery appears to be good.

Locked Rotor is reported as an overcrank fault "OC".

You first need to verify the engine fails to crank, which is likely a starter motor or start circuit failure.

If the engine cranks three separate times and then the OC fault occurs, it simply means the engine did not run... more likely a fuel issue.

But either can be caused by numerous reasons.

I have kohler 20RESA generator. I cannot clear the fault that says "engine m/n invalid shutdown". Can anyone help with this? I did go through the reset procedure, but fault reappears immediately.

Emergency shutdown operation is required when one of the above conditions occurs in diesel generator set.Diesel generating set itself has an emergency stop button, at this time, press the emergency stop button or quickly press the stop control handle of fuel injection pump to the stop position, the diesel generator will quickly cut off the load, and immediately close the throttle, while the red "emergency stop" light is on. Need to press the button again to delete the emergency stop signal. If there are serious faults or distribution faults, you can also press the button on the control panel, and the unit will stop immediately.

In fact, all faults always give operators some warning signal before spare parts break down or engine damage occurs. So the operators need to be smart, and notice alarm signals (sudden drop in oil pressure, abnormal sound, etc.) and immediately stopping the engine.
Emergency shutdown operation is different from normal shutdown operation.
Emergency shutdown operation.Once the operator finds that there is a serious fault or distribution fault in thediesel generating set, he can press the emergency stop button of the control panel to stop the unit immediately. If there is no special circumstances, we advise users not to stop the unit at will through the emergency stop button.

When a generator is heating after a few minutes what could be the cause

not enough information to answer. gas or propane?. if new, generator by it's very nature generates energy, and thereby heat. even coiled wires can get warm. what part is hot?
if you've owned it a while, and it is inordinately hot as compared to prior uses, is it lubricated ? running normal otherwise?

Gen starts then shuts down

Check rotor skip rings for cleanliness, rotor brushes. Stator resistance, rotor resistance. If ok then change control board

My 3kva generator not show voltage.I already change carbon bushes and AVR too.but result is still zero.please help me.

You need to measure the rotor and stator for correct resistance and shorts. You will need a good ohm meter and teh exact readings mostly on a rotor approx 22ohm and stator can be less than 1 ohm, but zero ohms to ground on any lead or ring

GE Generator 10kw model #040448. TRANSFER SWITCH FAULT message being displayed. Generator works fine. Generator output load voltage = 233V.

This generator has a built in transfer switch. If you do not have an external source of 240 volts going in to the unit (utility power), the transfer switch will show a fault or "abnormal" reading. If you do have utility power going in to the transfer switch, and the generator is on then you have a faulty transfer switch. It is time to warranty or get a replacement switch.

Rotor won't turn due to rare earth magnets have to much magnetism. The generator was working fine and the bearings had to be replaced. After replacing bearings and reassembling the generator we were...

You do not say what type/model generator you have, so I will just give you some basics.

There is nothing wrong with the magnets. Their power did not change at all, their pwer never changes, except to degrade slightly over time (hundreds of years.)

The generator rotor is hitting the stator. In other words, the alignment of the rotor inside the generator is off center, making the rotor bind on the inside of the stator, resulting in a lock-up.

With the generator attached to the motor, remove the generator end, and slowly try to turn the engine over by hand. REMOVE THE PLUG WIRE FROM THE PLUG FIRST, so that the engine cannot start. Watch inside the generator, and discover why the generator rotor is not aligned. Pehaps the bearings were installed incorrectly, or the housing is installed incorrectly. Most generator engines have a tapered power-takeoff shaft, where the gen. shaft connects to it. Is this Bolt tightened to specifications? Is there some debris floating around in the gen. (such as a screw, or a pebble, or a nut) that would impede its movement?

good luck

KIPOR KDE 6700TA 5KVA Generator

forget about the display read the manual and find out how many volts are needed to charge the battery....then
get a voltometer and disconnect the terminals from the battery and connect them to the voltometer while the generator is running...
find out what the reading is...if the reading is zero (0)...then post a problem on (no out put)...
if not.....then there has to be a mistake...
if it reads a voltage thats too low..then you AVR card is burnt out (AVR card is located in the other end of the generator (beyond the stator-side cover)...
