Can a chlorine puck in the skimmer basket give a false reading on a saltwater system?

I kept getting a low salt reading for a week and have tried everything, but seems i might need a new system...I was told to put a chlorine puck in teh skimmer basket until i can get a new one (its hot here). But now it seems to be working...I was just wondering if its a false reading or if its finally reading the salt correctly.

Never mind!! Fixed it;) For some reason it took more salt than recommended and over a week for it to read the salt!

SOURCE: no chlorine reading

Salt is sodium chloride, you can only measure salt levels now as your CL (cloride) is bound to a NA (sodium). Table salt =NACL, Your Intex system will tell you if your salt level is too high or too low but your old test equipment for free chlorine will continue to tell you no chlorine as it can't react with the chloride any longer as it is bound to the salt. That is why they tell you you never have to add more because the salt stabilizes it. Your chlorine is there it's bound to the salt. Use the pool it's fine and it makes your water feel really soft! Just keep the salt level right and your fine> It's confusing as they call the unit a chlorine generator! I had the same issue, called Intex and they told me the above.

SOURCE: no chlorine being produced

although you are close to the amount of salt that is recommended all pools are just different enough that the salt table is just a starting point if you do not have enough salt it is still possible to not trigger the alarm but not produce enough chlorine.
Start by getting a salt test strip kit and get your pool to 3000ppm this may take a day or so since you really need to filter and circulate the pool for 24 hours in between adding salt
Once you get the salt right then move on to generating

also do not worry about total chlorine you just need to concentrate on free chlorine this is the amount available in the pool to do it's job and dont forget to ad a stabilizer to help hold the chlorine level on hot sunny days

SOURCE: We have a Krystal Clear

You should always follow the instructions on the manual .. I have a 18X33X4 oval and had to start with over 350 lbs of salt and ran the pump without the chlorinator for 24 hours to properly disolve the salt. Then, I started with 12 hrs pump cycle with 10 hrs of chlorination in between the 12 hrs. Keep checking the chlorine level and adjust time from there. Currently at temperatures of 85 to 100, I run the system at 10 hrs pump with 8 hrs chrlorinator and water is Crystal Clear... In the 2 years with the intex system, I have not added any chemicals to my pool. I once had an issue when the water level went low while I was on vacation, when I came back, the chrolinator had turned off due to low flow and my pool water was green.. As soon as I re-started the cycle, a few days later, Crystal Clear again... NO CHEMICALS OR SHOCK added.... Hope this helps....

My Intex 5110 saltwater chlorinater system is driving me nuts. I keep getting low salt and high salt.

I would suggest that you keep your salt level around 2,5 for chlorination, however to get the green pool sorted your pool needs to be shocked and would recommenced to get your pool's free chlorine level at least up to around 5 in order to shock the pool as normal free chlorine level should be 3

Why does my salt level get low

You can get a false low salt reading if your chlorinator cell is very dirty. Before adding more salt clean the chlorinator cell as per your maintenance manual.

I have done everything the manual says, but my saltwater system will not stop blinking error code 91. The salt level is fine, and the cell is clean. Do I need to replace the cell. My pool is now green and...

Bummer!!! Looks like you checked both things that would cause the code 91 error for "Low Salt". Here's what I've done to solve my low salt "91 code in the past.. I overshoot by 1/2 bag = 20lbs of the recommended salt add quantity when the code appears. Calculate by using this formula..
.0067 X Pool Gallons. I have a 14,000 gallon pool and when I get the 91 code for low salt, I add about 110 lbs of salt. Manual says 93 lbs...let it circulate for 24 hours by running the pump only and then start the chlorination cycle.. Before doing this, you MUST make sure the cell in clean.. If any calcium buildup inside, it can give you a false "Low Salt" alarm.

I hope this helps!!

Hello,
First of all green water can arrise from a lot of different situation.
Low chlorine is one of them coupled with the crappy filter that comes with the intex pools it does not filter enough.

Start with getting your salt level to 3000ppm
any lower than 2700 and you will not generate enough chlorine and any higher than 3500 and you could go cloudy or trigger high salt alarms

you need to get the salt test kit that reads in #'s not color the color ones has to much of a variance
once your salt is at 3000 clean your cell then filter filter filter

I run my filter 24/7 if it is not generating chlorine I am filtering.

Clean your cartridge every few days
I have had the same 2 cartridges for this being my 4th season and have never been green or replaced the filters.
Also I reccomend a non foaming algecide

Just follow directions on bottle

Low flow indicator on saltwater pool filter

If your pool has the skimmer system there is a hose coming from the bottom of the skimmer to the wall of the pool which would be your suction to the pump. Disconnect the hose clamp from the suction port that goes through the wall of the pool remove the hose then unscrew the blue adapter on the inside of the pool there you will find a strainer / screen. Whatever gets pass the basket in the skimmer get's plugged up in that screen causing the pump to starve for water causing the LOW FLOW sensor to go off on the Saltwater pump.

Let me know if this helps any.
