If the laptop works fine off the power cord without any problems then
your power cord is ok, but if the battery is not charging then the
battery is probably dead and needs to be replaced. Batteries only have a
useful life, and when it's over they have to be replaced.
If the
laptop does not work with the power cord then either the power cord is
bad or the DC Power Jack where the power cord plugs into the laptop. If
either of them is bad the battery will not charge.
Check your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugs
into the computer. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the
jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to
take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the
motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

That usually indicates battery is beginning to go bad. Eventually it will not hold a charge and will need to be replaced.

I agree. Batteries have a limited life. Also--once you have a new battery installed, be sure you let it discharge all the way (until the computer tells you it has to be charged--about 3% remaining) at least once a month. This will ensure you get the maximum life out of a battery.

Could be down to a few things. First it is worth checking all the connections and making sure they are good and clean.
Im presuming that if it wont charge, it dies when you disconnect from the mains? If not let the battery die completely and then recharge fully. Discharging, Charging & discharging is also an effective method of calibrating the battery
If the battery gets hot while plugged in, you should remove the battery and allow everything to cool down (some systems have a CMOS setting to prevent over charging, this can take 3-5 days in a cool environment to unlock the battery)
Have a look at the power options in the control panel and make sure everything is reset to default settings.
I once disable hibernate option for a troublesome dell and this allowed the battery to take a charge.
A more aggressive route is to check the bios settings and check if you need to update
It is worth noting that if the laptop is new (or still in warranty) bring it back, it could be a faulty battery, which is not unheard of!
SOURCE: Laptop turns off intantly, when I unplug the charging cord
For those of you having the problem of a HP laptop shutting off when you unplug the charger and your battery is fully charged, I can help you. There is nothing wrong with the laptop, battery, or computer, it is a power management setting. If you go to display properties, select the screen saver tab, then click the "power" button, in the power schemes field is a drop down window, click on it and select "Rixane Power Scheme", it is a power switching utility that quickly switches between AC and Battery when the power cable/charger is plugged in or unplugged while the laptop is on. If you have it set to "always on" it will shut off when you pull the power cord, even if the battery is charged. This will also happen on many non-HP laptops, if you don't have a HP laptop or there is not a "Rixane" option available, select the "Portable/Laptop" power scheme. Hope this helps!
