Why did you replace the lcd inverter? Were you able to barely see icons on the desktop which is an indication that the lcd inverter is bad? If not, then you need to replace the lcd screen. If you could barely see the icons and you replaced the lcd inverter, then the inverter is bad. Just because the inverter is new does not mean it works. If the video shows on the external monitor, but you can't see anything on the laptop's screen even when you shine a flashlight on it then the lcd screen is bad.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your ideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad.
If you see no icons by shinning the flash light and nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card is bad.

I have a problem with my hp laptop monitor's hinges, could you link where you were able to purchase those hinges?

Also, make sure you monitor's ribbon cable isn't missing any wires or that all of those wires are fully contacting.

SOURCE: DELL inspiron 6400 laptop screen turned black

this sounds like a classic case of inverter problems, it could be just inverter coil thats gone which is an inexpensive repair, if it is the inverter then its a bit more.
try the Fn the F key that shows two tv screen icons, it may just have switched to external mode by accident

good luck

Sounds like your computer has just bit the dust, do your self a favor and purchase a new one. This time buy an XP, it might be a little bit more, but you get what you pay for.

My laptop Gateway ml6720 has a black screen Ive replaced the battery and power adapter no change. The fan comes on and it sounds like it boots up but no screen.

Sounds like either the screen or the video adapter has gone bad.
Do this: Connect the computer to an external monitor (there is a SVGA plug on the side of the computer. Be sure when you turn it on that you press teh Fn-special function key combo that switches the video output to the external monitor. If the external monitor works, then it's your computer's screen. Possibly the inverter. If the external monitor shows nothing, then it's the video card (which may be built into your motherboard).

I've seen this problem time and time again. Replacing the inverter fixed it every time. HOWEVER it could always be the CCFL backlight as well. Both fortunately are VERY inexpensive. Changing the inverter is easy but the CCFL will be a little harder. Take your time and remember how to put it all back together and you'll save that $100. I'm sure it's either of those two that's causing the backlight issues. NO NEED to change the entire LCD.

My gateway laptop didn't start up,when powered on only black screen appears

Hi jeangray 17,

If you see power lights but nothing appears on the screen, it could be a "POST" (Power-on Self Test) problem or simply LCD problem.

Here are some steps that you can try.

1. Remove the battery and the ac adapter then press the power button for at least 20 seconds to drain electric charges left from the system. (You may need to repeat this step to get it work.)

2. If above step doesn't work, try to plug in an external monitor and see if you get display from the external monitor. You may need to press the Fn + F10 or F6, depends on the key designed on the keyboard to toggle between displays.

3. If you get display from the external monitor, I'm sure your having problem with the LCD components. In this case, check and replace faulty LCD backlight, LCD cable or LCD inverter. The LCD inverter is often a culprit.

4. Try to reinsert the memory module/s (RAM) of the unit, try using one RAM at a time to see if it works. A faulty RAM will cause the issue not to POST.

5. If reinserting the RAM doesn't help, most likely your motherboard needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

Most probably you have a defective LCD screen cable. This is the only possibility left since you have changed the LCD screen & inverter, & an external monitor works fine. Check your LCD screen cable & replace it if necessary.

Try attaching an external monitor to the laptop & see if you could get any display on it. If this is successful, then you might have either a faulty LCD cable or screen inverter board.
The LCD cable transfers data signal from the motherboard & video card to the LCD screen. It also supplies high voltage DC power to the screen inverter board. The screen inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen. It converts low voltage DC power to high voltage AC power needed for the backlight lamp.
