I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with an NEC 6650A DVD drive. It has recently stopped working showing the following error message. "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
I have found some firmware on the NEC website but the computer does not accept it. The computer still recognises the drive as I have uninstalled it and the Add hardware wizard then re finds it. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks Martin

The CD Burner / Player / DVD Burner are all different heads. If the Dell Inspiron E1705 is an older model it is most likely you have reached the end of it's usable life for the CD burner part. If it is new the CD burner is most likely defective and hopefully warrantied. Otherwise these CD/DVD units can be replaced relatively inexpensively (as compared to buying a new laptop).
It's time to replace the defective (and probably warranty-expired) unit.
If your computer is a notebook, not a desktop, it's best to take the computer to a qualified technician, to disassemble your computer, and replace the drive.
Remove the drive by turning the computer upside down and take the screw out between the battery and the memory cover (next to a padlock symbol). Insert the screw driver into the little notch in the plate next to where the screw was and slide it towards the drive. The drive should now pop out. Boot the computer. Shut the computer down and reinsert the drive and reboot.
First try cleaning the DVD drive lense. If it does not help then Try system restore to restore your computer to a previous date. For that click Start- Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. Click Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next. Select a date from the calender( select a date when it used to work) and click Next twice. Windows will automatically restart when restoration is done
When windows starts again try to burn disc. If the same problem remains then the DVDRW drive may have some problem.
