If your friend said the ROM chip was hit by lighting then most likely is is damaged.

It is possible. This unit need servicing with some audio test gear.
This is not a simple DIY job.

http://www.retrevo.com/support/Pioneer-VSX-D411-Receivers-manual/id/385ci976/t/2/

I believe it's trying to tell you something is wrong with its digital sound processing.

This was the best source I could find on it:

If you switch it to satereo / direct and the light goes out I'd say that would clinch it.

Good day, I need your asst. I can't seem to remove the 2ch playback from my VSX-49TX Elite Pioneer reciever, I tried reseting it and nothing happen...can you help me.

If you have no sound, you can try the multi channel inputs on the back after switching to the multi chan input. If you have sound that way, you have a DSP problem. I can repair this issue to the component level, as many customers have found, the boards are very expensive, and no longer available. If you're interested in repairing your receiver, please visit my website at audioserviceclinic.com. There you will find the seminar I wrote for Pioneer, when I worked there as a Field Service Engineer, specializing in audio. You can contact me directly from my website. Thanks you.

Amp plays sound through previews of the movie - but NOT when the movie starts??

This sounds like a problem with the DSP chip. Turn off any DSP and surround modes in the unit and see if it at least plays in stereo. You may need to unhook the DVD player from the 5.1 inputs and put the front left/right into a CD or TAPE input to fully test this theory.
If that doesn't work, I have a VSX-D309 that just came up for sale (sorry, no remote)

No audio output

THE FIX - to audio problems that persist with the VSX-29TX and others using the AWX7272 DSP board is to replace the ROM on the DSP. My unit started failing on and off after 10 years of use! The intermittent DSP board is an Extremely Common and irritating Problem for this model! The replacement IC,(2) resistors + shipping and handling totaled $49.65 and my unit is finally fixed correctly! Don't believe other posts that you can get away with re-soldering; it will continue to fail again and again! Details of fix are:

Replacement for the old Pioneer ROM located at location IC 9374, should be done with the part PD6381A from Pioneer Electronics. You will also need to move (relocate) the 2 resistors (0 Ohm resistors) located at R9372 and R9371 to locations R9374 and R9373.

This component update applies to DSP boards marked as AWX7433, AWX7272.

This fix is validated (from Pioneer) on the VSX-26TX,VSX-27TX,& VSX-29TX it might also work in the VSX-908, VSX-908RDS and others as long as the same DSP board was used.

Let me caution and stress that surface mount soldering skills ARE REQUIRED to do this update! It also doesn't hurt to have excellent vision and/or an eye loop or microscope to check your work. Original ROM's were subject to timing changes internal to the part as a result of HEAT. This model does get HOT! The program was also modified as a further safeguard to re-occurrence.

I have the same problem with the static and distortion

I can only assume that the unit either produces noise or no sound at all. The DSP board contains all of the digital processing circuits. Even with all surround processing turned of, the signal still passes through this board. It is possible to repair the board, but special tools and techniques are required and most shops are not set up for that level of repair. Unfortunately, the safest option is to replace the board. Inquire whether or not there is a "core" charge. This means that there is some value to the bad board that can be refunded to you upon its return to the manufacturer. With a $300 board, you may be able to recover up to $100 by returning the defective board. Dan

Pioneer VSX-36TX popping and crackling during warm-up period

I have the exact same amplifier with what sounds like the exact same problem. I opened up the amplifier, and while it was powered on started tapping around until I heard the popping and crackling suddenly increase. I was using a piece of wood and the plastic part of a screw driver for this. The popping and crackling suddenly burst out onto all channels when I was tapping on the DSP board (encased in a metal enclosure to the very right of the amplifier).

I took off the metal enclosure (with the receiver turned off, of course :), and with the receiver on, and started tapping around the DSP board, and I found that the biggest crackling effect was achieved when I tapped on the Cirrus Logic CS493292-CL chip which does all the decoding and switching.

I detached and took out the DSP board and looked at it very carefully but of course couldn't find any bad connections. I tried resoldering all the feet of the Cirrus Logic chip and many many components all around to no avail.

Finally I tried applying pressure to the chip while the popping was going on, and it stopped. Further investigation revealed that bending the board around the chip produced the same effect.

For the life of me I couldn't figure out why bending the board eliminates the problem, but my solution was to put a piece of eraser wrapped in masking tape and taped to the Cirrus Logic chip, and two other pieces on the back of the board in such a way that when the metal enclosure was replaced onto the board, it put gentle but firm pressure onto the Cirrus Logic chip and at the same time bent the DSP board slightly.

It's been a few days without popping, clicking or static, but time will tell. Good luck!

No DTS sound / RESET

Hi I have a Pioneer VSX D908S which is basically the same amplifier as yours with the difference that the one I have has no THX certification, as a matter of fact the service manual is the same, and mine has the same problem. The prblem is located in the DSP board, if you are able to remove the bonett, you will see on the right side a metal cover, remove it, once you have removed it, look for a IC9374 it is located, -looking this board in front to you- almost at the left upper corner, this IC has the PDK042A on it, with a soldering iron resolder this circuit. This is common problem with this pioneer amplifiers, and this procedure not always works, the final solution is to buy the DSP board but it is expensive. Good luck! Miguel
