How to connect des-1005d

The new model. Just plug it in. No configurations. Any port for any use. The selling point is unmanaged. Look for the problem somewhere else (including the cables) till you are sure it's the switch. Then it needs to be replace.

The older model uses standard cabling practices, but still very versatile.

You should use a router instead of a switch...however if you still want to use the switch, request your service provider to provide two ip addresses, instead of regularly just one...but you mostly like need to pay monthly the extra ip address...alternatively ask your service provider to upgrade your cable modem to cable modem with router capability, ...

I have two des-1005d network switches. i want to communicate betwwen them with a cat5e cable. the cable is made as cross through and distance is about 70 meters. with one switch pc is connected and at...

Max distance for Cat5e cable is about 100M, but that is the best case scenario, essentially a straight line, down a building. If you have any kind of interference, like flourescent lighting, high voltage lines running parallel to the ethernet cable, the distance will be much less than 100M. Although it looks like you have 60 feet to spare, anything interfering with the cables will cut the signal down. Try to move the switches closer together, make the cable from pc to switch longer and ADSL modem to switch longer and cable between switches shorter. Use a known good straight through ethernet cable, as modern switches don't require crossover cables.

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_5e#Maximum_cable_segment_length

According to the ANSI/TIA/EIA standard for category 5e cable, (TIA/EIA 568-5-A[5]) the maximum length for a cable segment is 100 meters (328 feet). If longer runs are required, the use of active hardware such as a repeater, or a switch, is necessary.[6] [7] This 100 meter limit is all inclusive. According to some authors,[who?] the practical limit for permanently installed cable is about 90 meters, leaving 5 meters at each end for the patch cables that connect the end equipment to the wall panel.

Hope this helps.

I am trying to install the d-link ethernet switch to my virgin modem 256. I can succesfully get either my PC or my laptop connected to the internet but NOT both at the same time. Any ideas how to solve...

You need two cables one from the Modem into the internet port on the back of the router and another from Computer Port 1 into your computer then you should be able to connect via wireless. If not get onto the router CP and check the settings.

What type of Netgear Router you are using?
If you have more than one ethernet ports to your Netgear Router, then connect your switch with a patch cable to the Router. Switch on it and check.
So that can share the resourses.

2 pc connected but wont allow both on internet at once

Set up both pc's with dhcp. To do this, right click (My Network Places) in the start menu and choose properties. Right click your network connection and again choose properties. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then select properties. Choose (Obtain an IP Address Automatically). Then (OK) and again (OK). Do this on both pc's.
