Toshiba MK6025GAS HDD (External) not recognized

I took HDD from old HP laptop and put that in external HDD case. I didn't format HDD. I attached that External HDD to another laptop but its not showing up in My computer. It is IDE (40 pin interface) disk. 1. It shows up in BIOS 2. It shows up in Device Manager --> Disk drives as TOSHIBA MK6025GAS USB Device 3. It does not show up in Disk management I tried rebooting the laptop, didn't work. I tried unplugging USB a few times, didn't work. I tried accessing thro PE Builder Live CD, UBUNTU Live CD but it doesnt detect. Tried using a new enclosure as well wherein I got an error (Error code 10) On a couple of occasions it showed up when I did following: 1. Unplug and plug in USB 2. Kill explorer.exe manually and then rerun the same through "New Task" from task manager When I attach HDD to the laptop, I hear HDD spins for abt 5 seconds X 3 times and then i see blinking light. None of the above is working now.. Please help

From what you have written it seems that the Hard Drive is dead and doesn't have the ability to read the drive.
You will need a new hard drive this one is not recoverable.

Could you suggest any software to recover the data from this dead HDD? A freeware would be great!

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem

you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap
hope this helps

When I attach HDD, I do not get a message 'Windows found a new hardware....'. I have tried this HDD on another laptop but outcome is same.

Under Device management, I see HDD name as Toshiba and USB Mass storage device. No yellow, RED exclamation marks.

Just now, I tried Data recovery utility DiskDigger that was able to detect HDD, size etc. but it was not able to access it. First time when the disk was spinning, i got access denied error and when disk stopped spinning after 5 seconds X 3 times, it gave me I/O error.
Do you suspect firmware or PCB issue?

if you can detect in device manager right click on it select properties If you are running a Windows XP OS then you might be able to:

    - Click Properties in the menu that comes up
    - Click the Sharing tab
    - Click permissions
    - And finally, click Allow next to Full Control.

My usb ports on my laptop only recognizes my phone and mp3 player and not my external hdd, it tells me to format the plug and play external hdd. It does not do this in all my usb ports though

Maybe the external hard drive is to large to be recognized by your computer. Some computers won't recognize real large external drives.

Another problem could be that your external hard drive does not support Windows 7.

Have just been given the Toshiba Hard Drive PX1396U-3T01, number 2978109s. No install instructions, or paperwork. He is now overseas. How do I install the HD, or get a driver?

Your Toshiba PX1396U-3T01 external HDD is USB-attached, so you'll need to acquire a
standard USB cable to accomplish the physical layer attachment. USB cables do not have
the same connector at each end - the system (computer) end has a USB "A" connector (flat-shaped), and the device end (HDD) has a USB "B" connector (square-ish shaped).

There is no software (driver) needed for this external HDD - support for USB-attached external
drives (either HDD or flash drives) is built into WinXP, WinVista and Win7.

IF your version of MSwindows doesn't want to recognize the Toshiba when you plug it in, try
START > Run > then type in "diskmgmt.msc"

then select the command "Rescan disks."

If you're running Mac OS or Linux, repost including your OS (operating system) info.

> put HD into an external USB case

Correct. The BIOS does not see "external" USB devices.

However, see if you can "enable boot from USB devices",
and change the "boot order" to include USB devices.

You may need to remove the old disk-drive, and install the new disk-drive in its place.
Then, put the old disk-drive into the external USB case.
Install Windows to the new disk-drive, and then connect the external USB case,
and copy all the files from the "old" disk-drive to the "new" disk-drive.

Hello. I have a laptop hp, but i found out that the hdd is toshiba mk6465GSX.. Today i was working in my office and it suddenly crashes and the board didn't see it for booting..in fact the hdd is...

You can try placing it into an external hard drive caddy (your internal plugs into it)
The device will plug in usb 2.0 and recognize as an external drive.

If the drive is unrecognizable, than unfortunately it has physically failed and costs to recovery data are very high.
Always have 2 forms of backup for all data.

I tried to re install the operating system but a blue screen error appear when trying to load. Any solution?

Here is what I recommend format the HDD with a PC, remove your laptop HDD and put it into a external case unless you habe the capability to hook it up directly to your PC motherboard you will have to turn your PC off to do it this way or your PC won't see it, either way you can format the drive with dik management. You can pick up a external shell for $10.00. Whats seems to me is happening is that when you reload the OS the HDD is trying to write the OS back where the exsisting one is. The only way to get a clean install is to wipe the HDD clean with a reformat. Make sure you save any wanted datt on an external storage drive.

Toshiba 500 GB External Hard drive cant be detected by windows xp

yes you could simply format the harddrive in Fat32 using your macos that would be the best solution but don`t forget to backup your data by copy pasting the files on your mac or something else and after that to move them on the external hdd again to be available on the windows machine
