The car is severly overheating since we put a new thermostat in last week. It would seem that the old one hasn't worked since I've had the car as it has always been heavy on fuel, run cold and the heater hasn't worked. The radiator has been checked and is fine. On running the car to get it warmed up, and then removing the upper hose, very little water came out, which the radiator specialist suggested, would be the water pump. My question is, where exactly is the water pump and how do I go about changing it?

You can't determine if your pump is bad. You just have to take it out and look at it. Its internal insisde the timing cover right by the timing chain. Those pumps are pretty bulletproof, because they are internal, but you never know. I have replaced 1 so far in my 12+ years with Nissan and that was a 1998 Maxima qwith over 200 000 miles. Unless you have a coolant leak or somekind of funny noise coming from the timing chain area, you really can't tell, if the pump is bad. good luck.

then the water pump must be bad in it .Take the rad cap off and rev motor up if it goes down the the pump is working if it spays of look at the head gasket being damaged .Check and make sure spark plugs are not wet either if one is soaked signs of a leaky head gasket

sounds like something clogged in the block its self try to find an acid flush and flush the system a few times untill it comes out clean

It could be just air in the system, or it could be the heater matrix just by your feet, fitted central dash, check to see if the two water pipes that go into the car from the engine compartment are hot if there is only one that is then thats your problem, but if they are both cold the problem is more to do with where the water is coming from, please let me know how you get on
Testimonial: "Great tips, pointed me in the right direction."

You are correct the upper radiator hose leads to the thermstat housing. The thermostat housing should be retained by only 2 bolts.
