You are correct the upper radiator hose leads to the thermstat housing. The thermostat housing should be retained by only 2 bolts.

I recently had to replace thermostat on 2001 Nissan Frontier 2.4L and apparently the all powerful Google has no idea. The thermoatat is not on the top hose as stated on most sites. It is the bottom hose. The EASIEST way to get to it is remove your fan because it is behind fan on motor. Also there are 3 bolts holding it in place (left that tidbit seeing as how the thermostat housing is cast aluminum and not a part you can go pick up from your local parts house.) You will need some high temp gasket sealer because the thermostat does not come with gasket only water pump does. After you have replaced all parts good luck getting all the air out of the system. Which took an hour and a half. Bleeding bolt located to the right of the top hose on top of the engine. ~Crystal

Where is thermostate located

Follow upper radiator hose to block, thermostat should be there, inside thermostat housing. Also look into purchase of Haynes or Chilton repair manual for your vehicle, lots of info there.

2001 Nissan Frontier REPLACE WATER PUMP - removed Radiator & Hoses Need HELP with REMAINDER

NOTE: When removing water pump assembly, be careful not to get coolant on timing belt unless you intend to replace it. (if it has more than 60.000 miles. it probably SHOULD be replaced, however, you must do it correctly or severe engine damage will occur.)
Drain coolant from drain plugs on both sides of cylinder block and radiator.
Remove radiator hoses (upper and lower) and fan shroud.
Remove drive belts.
Remove water pump pulley.
Remove crankshaft pulley and front (upper and lower) belt cover.
Remove water pump

Frontier 2000 2.4L King Cab 100K miles. Temp guage indicates overheating. Will intermittently spike then drop to normal. Engine does not "smell" hot or run rough at any time. Grab upper hose, you can...

I've had problems with Datsun (later Nissan) engines hanging the closed thermostat until it boiled, then the thermostat released and operated normally. If you increase the small vent hole in the thermostat valve plate a small amount, the problem disappears. It seems that steam from engine operation gathers behind the thermostat sensing bulb and delays opening. The increase in vent hole size lets the steam through and allows the hot water to open the valve. Hope this helps!

How do I change the thermostat on a 6 cylinder nissan frontier truck

Hello Wayne...the thermostat on your truck is located on the engine under the thermostat houseing. It is positioned in a fairly tight place. It can be replace with regular hand tools, ratchet extension, swivel socket and wrench. Follow the radiator hose to the thermostat houseing to locate. I suggest you replace it with a Nissan thermostat, they seem to last longer than an aftermarket, and come with a new houseing. Enclosed is a picture of the houseing you will be removing.
Make CERTAIN you install the new thermostat in the correct position...if installed backwards it will NEVER open and your engine will overheat in minutes possibly causeing severe damage.
Good luck..i hope this helps, please take time to rate me a fixya.

How do I replace the thermostat on my 2002 Nissian Frontier

Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. Remove the hose. There are 3 bolts holding the thermostat housing in place, remove them. Remove the thermostat and clean all surfaces. Install new thermostat. Apply a thin amount of gray silicone sealer to the thermostat housing. Install housing and retaining bolts. Install hose and secure. Add coolant and check for leaks.
