You are correct the upper radiator hose leads to the thermstat housing. The thermostat housing should be retained by only 2 bolts.
I recently had to replace thermostat on 2001 Nissan Frontier 2.4L and apparently the all powerful Google has no idea. The thermoatat is not on the top hose as stated on most sites. It is the bottom hose. The EASIEST way to get to it is remove your fan because it is behind fan on motor. Also there are 3 bolts holding it in place (left that tidbit seeing as how the thermostat housing is cast aluminum and not a part you can go pick up from your local parts house.) You will need some high temp gasket sealer because the thermostat does not come with gasket only water pump does. After you have replaced all parts good luck getting all the air out of the system. Which took an hour and a half. Bleeding bolt located to the right of the top hose on top of the engine. ~Crystal
