No sound when video taping - Olympus FE-310 Digital Camera

You may have damaged the heads if your cleaner tape was old and dryed out and had grit on it, buy a new camera head cleaning tape for a start, never rewind it as lots of folk do, if you do that all you do is put the old dirt back on the head.

hi, the problem could be because of the problem with the pinch roller ,either it has some wear or the supporting spindle needle has some improper orientation. Is this with a specific tape or all tapes? if it is specific to a tape then it can be because you kept the recorded tape near magnet which causes this rythmic sound drop out. i guess the first one may be mostly happened. all the best sreejith

Try opening the front hatch of the tape by pressing the small, square button on the right or left (short) side of the tape. Check the black tape inside for any marks, dirt, scratches, tears, etc. If the tape is fine then your unit needs to be cleaned with a tape cleaner available at any electronics specialty or retail store. are those old videos recorded from the same camera? you might need a head cleaner for your camera. Try to play the tapes in different camera for comparison test. caution: make sure that the camera's mechanism does not destroy the tape or put a line or dent on the tape's edges. I suggest you convert those videos to digital format before it's too late.

left side image freeze indicates that the tape supply guide needs adjustment. best done by a technician with proper test equipment.

Since it is playing the tape, the play head is ok. Now recording is done by recording heads so you may have a clogged heads or damaged recording heads. Try to clean the heads with head cleaning tape to see if it would help. 1. remove the tape and leave the door open. 2. using a canned air, blow out any dusts in the tape area. 3. run head cleaning tape for about 10 seconds and no more. 4. try the recording.. If this does not resolve, you may have a damaged or heavy clogged video heads. Take it to nearest video technician for a diagnostic. -James

It could be that the video heads are just clogged.
Get a known good video tape and put it in the unit and let it just play and play and play. Quality video tapes have head cleaning substances built into the tape. If this does not work, get a Scotch Black Watch tape head cleaner. If that does not work the the heads are bad or some other problem.

Hi , try to play your old video taken if still have no sound , if the same no sound the audeo system has a problem.
If having sound in old video collection , the tape that you are using now are having deffect connot record sound. replace a new tape, and try record again.

The 3710 does not support sound while taping. It only captures short video segments without recording any audio. / Don

The "crackling" sound you describe sounds suspiciously like mis-tracking. That is: The result of the Hi-Fi heads (which are on the rotating video headwheel or drum) not exactly following the recorded tracks. Have you tried adjusting the tracking slightly? The reason this happens is that the Hi-Fi tracks are MUCH narrower than the thinnest video track (used for 6 hours per T120 tape). Tape stretches and shrinks as it ages. Video recorders wear with normal use in such a way that the tracking changes. The problem is often worse with tapes recorded at the SLP (6 hour) speed because the servo cannot correct errors as fast when the tape is moving slowly (on some machines only). Tape quality also counts...and manufacturers change their formulations without public notice. All these things can lead to "archived" tapes being lost. Solution: Use the best quality tape you can afford, not the cheapest; record at the highest possible speed. Store the tape carefully. Never use a cheap "rewinder" because they can over-tighten the tape causing wrinkles, stretches, and other kinds of damage.
