When you hit Start to cook, do the inside light and turntable come on?

    Any unusual noises?

Is it louder or quieter than usual?

What would cause the glass tray in the microwave to shatter

  • The glass tray had a hairline crack or stress fracture that was not visible
  • It got a little too hot in one area
  • The expansion from the heat caused the fracture to expand and therefore crack and break
An accidental bumping of the microwave plate on the countertop while going from the microwave to the dishwasher might set up the above situation. The spoon your seven year old left in the mac and cheese might have arced and nicked a small piece of the glass. Whatever the cause, microwave trays break and they break for a lot of reasons.

All foods cooked in the microwave produce heat. Microwaves themselves are not hot, but the foods cooked in a microwave get hot - some much hotter than others.
Even though most microwave glass trays are tempered, they are not designed to hold up under high temperatures. You will see most microwave trays stamped with the words "For microwave oven use only" This is to let us know that it's probably not a good idea to use the trays in a conventional oven.
Any air pockets, cracks or gaps in the glass can enlarge under heat. Since glass isn't very receptive to being stretched, breakage can occur.

I have an old Goldstar microwave (MV1140T) that just stopped heating. The fan still works but the food won't heat up. What can I do?

The problem is caused by a bad magnetron, "common problem" or the high voltage capacitor and diode, all three work together to heat the food. The repair cost for parts and labor will be high enough to consider buying a new microwave oven.

Food will not heat everything else is working

If it does not heat, with all other functions working, the problem lies with the magnetron circuit. The magnetron is the part that makes the microwaves to heat the food. Typically, the magnetron fails and shorts out. Symptoms when this occurs is a loud hum from the oven and does not heat the food. The replacement magnetron costs are close to the price of a new microwave oven, so it rarely pays to have it fixed.

LG LMVM1935SB Microwave won't heat anymore!

With these symptoms, I would suspect you have a bad magnetron.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

Some manufacturers will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. If nothing else, you can save about $75 by taking it to the shop yourself.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:

It doesnt matter how old a system was. components can be failed at any point in time. unplug the unit. carefully disassembly and visually check the diode near magnetron and capacitor, it might be broken. If seems good, check the thermostat continuity,if beeping. changage your magnetron. be careful capacitor store charges that deadly. discharge the capacitor first.
when you change mag. change the diode too.

Maytag Microwave model#MMV5186AA

Typically, no heating of food, indicates a bad Magnetron (tube) or associated components. The oven can be repaired. Magnetrons are not hard to replace and can be ordered online through MCM electronics www.mcmelectronics .

However, due to the dangers of high-voltage within the unit, I would recommend taking the unit to a repair center.

Look in the manual to see what the warranty says. See if there is any information regarding the magnetron or parts. You may be able to get it repaired for free parts, less labor.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Good Luck,

- Jim

Convection oven problem

Most of the time the magnetron is defective if the food is not heating up.
In some cases there is a defective low power transformer or other componenents associated with the magnetron.
I would suggest to check the owners manual under the warranty section. Sometimes the magnetron has 5 years warranty.
Good Luck.
