SOURCE: 30gb zune only has black screen

Try these ideas first, except calling for service since it's out of the warranty: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931912. If this doesn't work then, you'll have to erase all the content on your Zune through the buttons on it and use the Zune software to restore the firmware and getting it to boot again. If this doesn't work, then the hard drive may be bad in the Zune and will need to be replaced. If the hard drive is bad, you'll usually hear a lot of repetitive clicking. I hope this helps.

My zune 30g has been locked for over 1 year now and i do not know how to have it unlocked. In addition posting it to you isnt that easy as Iive in the Caribbean (Trinidad to be exact). I will appreciate...

1. Set the Hold Switch to unlocked. 2. Press and hold the Back button zune_button_back.gif while you press and hold the top of the Zune Pad. zune_restart.jpg 3. Immediately after you release the buttons in step 2, press and hold the following combination of buttons, depending on your Zune model:

- immediately press and hold the Backbutton while you press both the left side of the Zune pad and the center of the Zune pad. Continue to hold these buttons until your Zune device restarts and "Please wait" appears on the screen. zune_gen1_restore.jpg 4. After "Connect Zune to your PC" appears, connect the Zune device to the computer that has the current Zune software installed, and then update the device to the current Zune device software.

I just bought a zune mp3 32 GB model 1402 at a pawn shop. It had music on it when I bought it. I plugged it into my car stereo right away. Later on, a few hours ago, zune just went black and it states...

Does device manager recognize it as anything? Even some generic name like "usb composite device" or something like that? Or does it say Zune or something else?

I bought my Zune 2 years ago and thought I had lost it, but found it. So I have been using it for only 1 year. About 2 weeks ago even after charged, it will only play off the charger for about 45 minutes....

Debbie,
Zune batteries are replaceable. They can be purcahsed for about $10-$15 and with a little knowledge can be replaced by anyone. Check the internet for both the battery and replacement instructions. eBay is a great place to find the battery and most places even include the needed tools

Zune locked

Go look on zune.net and then click support. My zune just did the same thing a little bit earlier and I was worried so I went looking on the net and found these entries. Under support it says:

My Zune 30 is frozen on the boot screen, now what do I do?
You will need to reboot your device after noon GMT (that's 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific time) on Jan 1, 2009.
Please unplug your Zune (no AC or USB cables).
Because your Zune is frozen your device battery will begin draining, this is good.
The battery will eventually be fully depleted and the screen will go black.
After noon GMT on January 1 connect your AC power or USB cable such that the battery can begin charging again.
Once the Zune has enough battery to boot it should do so normally and you can go back to enjoying your Zune!

My Zune 30 has been working fine today, should I be worried?
Nope, your device is fine and will continue to work as long as you do not plug it into the PC before tomorrow.
If you plug your device into a PC before noon GMT Jan 1, 2009 your device clock will be set to the last day of the leap year and you will experience the freeze issue. If this happens, see above.
The PC that you plug into does not have to have the Zune software installed in order for your device clock to be set and the leap year bug to occur so you should avoid plugging your Zune 30 into any PC today.

What if I have DRM content on my Zune?
Your DRM content will most likely not be affected by this issue. However, it is a good idea to sync your device with your PC once the freeze has been resolved in order to ensure that all of your licenses are up to date.

What if I took the advice on the forums and hard reset my device by disconnecting the battery?
This is not a good idea and we do not recommend opening your device up yourself. However, if you already did it…
If you have DRM content on your device, your DRM store is now out of sync with your secure clock.
You will need to wait 24 hours from the time that you reset the device and then resync your DRM licenses from your PC.
Alternatively you can format your device and resync the content.

Zune charging problems, hardware problems

I had a 30g w/same problem. I installed the Zune software from CD. Plugged the Zune into my USB jack and waited hrs for the full screen battery icon to go away. It never did. Here is what I did to fix it. I left the Zune disconnected until its battery drained and the lcd went dark. In this state, pressing the play/pause button, caused the full screen battery icon to appear briefly before the lcd went dark again. With the Zune disconnected from my xp pc, I ran Windows Update in express mode. I have Windows system restore and auto-update turned off and rarely update my pc, so I also took the opportunity to take a manual system check-point (so I could restore from the check-point if an update trashed my pc). I took and installed all the latest Windows updates. When it was done, I had all the latest security updates and IE 7. At this point I went to http://www.zune.net/en-us/products/zunesoftware/download.htm and downloaded the latest Zune software. I installed the Zune software update. I ran the new Zune software on my PC and found the device tab. NOW I connected the Zune to a USB port on the back of my PC. The full screen battery icon appeared on the Zune but nothing appeared in the Zune software. I left it this way for a few minutes. It occurred to me that I might get more power through the USB port if I turned off my other external USB devices, which I did. Within a few minutes, the Zune FINALLY came to life and a Zune splash screen appeared on the device. The device booted and was FINALLY recognized by the Zune software on my PC. Shortly after that I noticed that it already started synchronizing with my PC music collection. I figured it would charge up and download my entire collection (20gig) so I grabbed some sleep for a few hours. When I returned, the PC was asleep too. Unfortunately, the Zune was not charged and had stopped sync'ing. Not to be discouraged, I woke up the PC, exited the Zune software and left the device charging for an hour or so. When I returned, the device was about 80% charged. I quickly disconnected and played my first music video on the device!!!! I reconnected (the Zune software auto-launched) and left it sync'ing and charging for a while longer. When it was 100% charged, I disconnected and have been using it for a few hours. It was a long painfull road to get this thing setup, but it was WELL WORTH IT! I am already a huge fan of this device. In fact, I'm considering passing this one on to my wife so I can get the 80gig. Hang in there, it's worth it!!!!

PS: one sidebar -- I have noticed that the pc software will only sync about 800 songs in a session. I have simply been restarting the sync to get the next session going. At this point, I am fully synchronized and have 4.5 gig free.
