Gotcha... it MAY be a internal ribbon cable to your screen is loose (or not seated 100%) OR sometimes a cable one conductor inside the cable breaks and acts like a switch ~ providing a OK display sometimes ~ or not.
A PC repair shop will take a quick look for you for X-Bux and IF it is a loose connector/ribbon cable they MAY be able to fix it for you on the spot... A decent camera repair shop may be a answer for you too? They are very familiar with tiny screws and display repairs. Be careful though and don't spend too much...
I would not recommend you open it yourself because sometimes things go "boing" and tiny things go flying.

which also may well have caused damage to the buffer and logic boards."

During start-up the computer will go to a black screen for awhile and then the pointer arrow will show alone, and then the system will come up.
If you think it's a hibernation problem, pull the ac plug and battery out for about 1 hour and then plug back in.
If this didn't work, then try the F8 Key and choose "Last Know Good Configuration".

You can't. You'll have to replace the lcd. You'll just keep getting more and more until your lcd dies completely.
