Look under control panel for Power Management options. Adjust those to set the screen to always on when you have power and to power down after 20 minutes on battery. Making adjustments to these settings will cause battery life to drop but will accomplish what you desire as far as keeping the screen and hard drive on. Adjust the Hard Drive power settings in the same fashion.

Enable Hibernation in Windows 7 Starter on Samsung N150

Sleep mode on a Windows 7 PC saves power without you having to turn your computer off and without losing any work. This option cuts the power to your monitor, powers down the hard drive and pauses all functions until you awaken the computer from hibernation. Whether you have a laptop, desktop or workstation, putting your computer into sleep mode will lower your electric bill and save money! Click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your desktop. In the lower right corner of the Start menu, next to the "Shut Down" button, is a button labeled with a small, right-pointing arrow. Mouse over the arrow. The Shut Down menu appears. Point at "Sleep" and click on this option. Your Windows 7 computer goes into sleep mode. Wake your computer from sleep mode by jiggling the mouse. There may be a delay of a few seconds before your hardware powers on. All of your open programs are still open and your work is intact, just as you left it before the computer entered sleep mode. Configure your Windows 7 PC to go into sleep mode automatically when it is not used for a certain amount of time. Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." Click "System and Security." Click "Power Options." A menu opens. Click on "Choose when the computer sleeps" and select the number of minutes of inactivity. You can also set a separate time interval to put your monitor into sleep mode. If you set both to 10 minutes, then your PC and monitor will automatically go into sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity Your Computer in sleep mode b> First, save all of your work. Information in computer memory is not saved while your computer is on standby. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel, then Power Management. My dell Studio laptop takes too long to wake from sleep mode and the monitor just flickers when i try to switch on

If you use Windows 7, u might have hybrid sleep activated. This is similar to hibernate. When u choose SLEEP, your computer goes to hibernate. Sometimes this hibernate just hangs. You have to reboot computer.
Try pressing the power button for several seconds (10-15). It should power off the laptop.
If not, unplug the charger and remove the battery for a few minutes. Then try to start it up again.

I have an Acer Aspire One netbook (model AOA-110) and when i try to boot it up it goes to the boot up screen and brings up a black screen and asks if i want to choose safe mode, safe mode with networking,...

Frequently ACER ASPIRE ONE A110 and A150 hang and give a black screen of death. Most probably this is due to the BIOS problems and if you want to boot them again, a BIOS updating is required.
First, download the required BIOS from the Acer site:http://gd.panam.acer.com/home/ and unzip it by another computer. (Your netbook is already dead!)

Among the extracted files and folders, there is a folder namely Dos_Flash. Open it and there are four file items there like "3310, 3310.fd, FLASHIT, and readme.
Now rename 3310.fd as ZG5IA32.fd and FLASHIT as FLASHIT.EXE and keep the rest as they are.
Copy all these four files to a fully formated and blank USB stick. In this USB stick there should be no other files or folders than what you copied now ( 3310, ZG5IA32.fd, FLASHIT.EXE, readme )

Keeping this USB stick in hand go to the dead netbook. Switch off the device if it is already on. Insert the USB stick. Having the AC power and the battery connected to the device press and hold FN+Esc and simulatneously press the power button to turn on the netbook.
Release the FN and Esc buttons after a few seconds and now the power button will be blinking. In this stage press once the power button alone.
Now the device will start updating the BIOS, we can see the process as the LED of the USB stick flashes. In a few minutes-say less than 10 minutes-the system will restart and come to life again.
Don't disturb it during this process and wait until it comes to full level of operational condition to remove the USB stick.

Best of luck,

Sony laptop

You probably have the "go to sleep" timeout set too low. Check out "Power Options" in the control panel.
