Num lock activated and can't turn it off

I have a small notebook laptop with no 10 key pad. The numbers are on my keyboard as well as the top row as usual with all laptops. Somehow my num lock got activated and now i have to press the "fn" key anytime i have to use the m or any of the keys that contain a number. Can anyone help me turn this off?

One of your Function keys (F11, F12, etc., usually F11) will also have the NumLock function on them. So when you hold Fn and press F11, it will toggle the Number Lock. Try holding Fn and press F11, this should turn it off (and back on should you ever want to use it again). Your keyboard should be labeled with the various functions keys have when Fn is pressed, you may have to look for the one that reads NumLk.

How to work key pad

If You mean keyboard number pad Press the "Num Lk" button, which is located to the right of the "F12" key along the top of the keyboard, to turn on the keyboard number pad. The Inspiron 1525 number pad mimics the type of the number pad you would find on a larger keyboard. The blue numbers on the keys in the middle of the keyboard are activated when you press the "Num Lk" button. For example, if you press the "U" button on the keypad, a "5" will appear on the screen when the "Num Lk" is enabled. Press the "Num Lk" button again to turn off the number pad

Unlock number lock

On a laptop, the "Num Lock" key has a function slightly different than the one it performs on full-d desktop keyboards. Activating "Num Lock" on a laptop usually transforms a set of central keys, including many letters, into number keys, allowing typists used to entering numbers on a keypad to type efficiently. While on desktop keyboards "Num Lock" usually has a dedicated key, on laptops it often shares a key with another function on MacBooks, for example, it shares the "F6" key and you must hold down the "Shift" or "Fn" key to activate it.

Look for the "Num Lock" key on your laptop's keyboard. This is usually near the top of the keyboard. If the key says nothing on it except "Num Lock" if that's the only function the key performs you can just press it to activate the lock; a light will probably go on somewhere to indicate that "Num Lock" is on. If the key has multiple functions, you'll have to hold down a different key while pressing it. Hold down "Shift" and press "Num Lock" if the writing saying "Num Lock" appears above some other writing on the key, the way various symbols appear above the numbers on the keyboard's number row. Hold down "Fn" and press "Num Lock" if the writing saying "Num Lock" appears in a different color often light blue that's shared by the "Fn" key.

When my number lock is on the letters will not print as stated they will print a number or other

This is normal for a keyboard with embedded number pad, rather than a separate 10-key area. Turn off the number lock to type the alphabetical characters and use the top row of numbers to enter values. Turn on the number lock when entering only a long string of numbers.

Alternatively, connect a USB external keyboard to the notebook. Either get a large keyboard with a separate number pad or get a 10-keypad only (http://www.cyberguys.com/product-details/?productid=37379 ). Then you can have a normal keyboard and stil have the 10-key functions without toggling the NumLock often.

I hope this helps.

WHAT IS THE ICON ON TOP TO THE LEFT OF THE CAPS LOCK ICON? HOW DO YOU TURN IT OFF?

This is either the Num Lock or the Scroll Lock. To turn off the Num Lock, look at the top left of your number pad on the right side of the keyboard, and press the Num Lock key. To turn off the Scroll Lock, press that key in the middle of the top row of 3 keys above your arrow keys.

You have to press Fn and Num Lock keys to activate numeric keyboard, rembember deactivated when you wish to use the letters that share the physical keys with numpad, this is done in the same way that you activated it ( Fn + Num Lock).

Text has changed to numbers

The keyboard on this model and lots of others have a built in 10 key number pad that is activated by a key combination. In this case num lock activated by pressing Fn+Scroll. The Fn key is to the right of the left Ctrl key and the Scroll key is in the top row upper right hand corner and doubles as the num lock key when the Fn key is pressed at the same time.

There is a key on the top row of keys just to the left of the backspace key that should have NUMLK or NUM Lock on it. Try pressing this key once to unlock the number pad.

Fn key wont turn off

OK, I've found a soliution! :) I've been diging the internet and many people are having the same problem, so it is a common problem however the soliution is very simple (in my case). The thing is that laptops does not has a saparated Num Pad, and numbers can be found on keys under F1-F12 row or/and (active with Fn key) on alphabetic keys uiopjkl;m/ and so on. But if there is a NumLk key on your keyboard, you can lock the Num Pad on alphabetic keys. Then you have to hold Fn key pressed to write letters.  Find the NumLk key and try to turn off the Num Pad :)
On my laptop (Acer extensa 5120) NumLk key is on F11 and active when Fn is depressed.
Hope this wil help :)
