My windows vista Business cannot install my Lexmark X83 All-in-one printer!

Lexmark is not officially making any driver for the X83 that will work with Vista because its a 32 bit printer and Vista is 64 bit. Sounds like some BS to me. So, I have the same problem, a perfectly working printer and an incompatible OS. My Mom was using an old mac and had an X83 printer which she loves. She now has a new PC running Vista. Only now, I have the problem of how to get the X83 to work with Vista. Supposedly the lexmark 5200 drivers will work. My suggestion is to power off and unplug the USB cable to the X83, and manually remove any driver(s) related to it that may have been installed using the system control panel device manager. Then attempt to install the xp driver for X83 per the post below. I'm going to then plug in the USB cable and power up the printer and see if it works (it probably won't) but I'm hoping it'll then cue itself looking for the 5200 series drivers which supposedly do work according to one post on MS forum, I quote:

"After reading all these posts I was both discouraged, but more determined than ever to get my X83 to run on Vista. I have to say the determination payed off! That's right...I just both scanned and printed 7 pages on my X83 running on Vista!!!! Here's what I did. I first installed the XP driver for X83 hoping I could dumb my laptop down to make it run on an XP version....no luck there, but when I did that, my laptop recognized the X83 as a Lexmark 5200 series which is also an all in one. I thought, well, if that's what it wants, that's what I will give it. If you go to the Lexmark website and look under downloads/drivers, there is a list that shows all compatible OS. The 5200 series is listed here with a Vista compatible driver. Once I downloaded it and went through the installation wizard....it worked LIKE A DREAM!!!! I hope this helps all of you as I also understood and felt your frustrations! Good luck!!!"

Lexmark x83 carrier stall

http://support.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/knowledgebase.cgi?ccs=229:1:0:95:0:0&framed=&docid=ENUS22722&relevance=0
Use the above link to trouble shoot the problem.

Error: "Carrier Stall" ID:470

To check the cartridge carrier:

1. Unplug the printer.
2. Move the cartridges to the left by hand and then take them out.
3. Try to print without the cartridges in the carrier. Do you still receive a Carrier Stall error message?
4. If not, put the cartridges back into the carrier and snap them in at the back. The message should no longer appear.

If the power light on the printer is not blinking, the error message may be caused by a communication error. Do the following:

1. Remove any other devices attached to the USB/LPT port.
2. Uninstall the Lexmark printer.
3. Connect the printer directly to the PC and ensure that power is being supplied to the printer.
4. Reinstall the printer.

X83 lexmark A06 error (paper jam)

Normal 0 I suggest you get a sheet of Card Stock (Heavy paper) and place it in the feed way. Then press the print button applying a slight amount of pressure on the Card Stock so it will feed through the printer. The reason for this is in some cases I have been able to clear the paper track of debris that was deposited there over time.
Worth a try, as I have fixed a number of printers this way, saving costly repairs.
Hope this helps. Bud

Need cord

You can visit your local hardware store. Bring with you your old cord. You can also go to the store where you have bought your printer. You need to tell them your printer brand and model number.

Lexmark x83 problems

Normal 0 Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud

Lexmark X83 missing parts

You can download the drivers from Lexmark website. If it is just the power cord, you may be able to find one from another piece of equipment that will work. But, if you lost the "brick" for the power supply that would be harder to replace. A new printer would probably cost less than replacing the parts. You can get a new Lexmark All-In-One for $60-$99 dollars. The print quality on a new printer would be better, and the cartridges are less expensive.

Can not install on windows vista basic

I am not sure of your question. Lexmark model x83 has drivers only for Win Xp and  Win 2,000.    Unless they. Lexmark elect to have their software people write or develop a driver for Win VISTA for this model printer ,no one else ever will. Maybe call or write to them.  Their is a 20% off printer upgrade offer on a VISTA compatable printer.
Your other option is to downgrade to WIndows Xp. I personally see no advantages to  VISTA , at least for me. Xp is much faster.

It prints ok, but paper is blank (no ink at all)

1. Remove the protective tape from the cartridges:
1. With the printer power on, open the front cover of the printer. The cartridge carrier should move to the middle.
2. Remove the cartridge(s) from the printer.
3. Look on the underside of the cartridge(s). If there is yellow tape and/or transparent blue tape there, remove it.
2. Clean the cartridge nozzles:
1. Go to the Lexmark Control Program or Solution Center and run the Clean print nozzle test.
If a black cartridge is installed, you should see black lines only.
If the color cartridge is installed, you should see yellow, magenta (a reddish purple), and cyan (a dark sky blue) lines.
If a photo cartridge is installed, you may see different colors.
2. Examine the diagonal lines above and below the solid horizontal lines. These diagonal lines should be solid from left to right, with no gaps.
If there are gaps in the lines, you could run the Clean Print Nozzle page a few more times to try and clear it up or try the "wicking" procedure below to conserve ink.
If the page is faded from left to right and the wicking procedure doesn't clear it up, your cartridge is probably out of ink.
3. Clean ("wick") the cartridges:
1. Remove your cartridges following the instructions in your User's Guide.
2. Take a warm, damp paper towel and fold it so that it has about 4- to 6-ply thickness.
3. Set the ink cartridge right side up on the damp paper towel so that the ink nozzles are touching the towel, and hold the cartridge in this position for about 15 seconds. The nozzles are where the ink comes out of the cartridge.
4. Now drag the cartridge lightly across the paper towel in one direction only (left to right) until the bottom of the cartridge looks clean.
5. Turn the cartridge over so that you can see the bar code sticker on the back. Note: Only perform steps 6 and 7 if the contacts look dirty or corroded.
6. Using a clean pencil eraser, clean the contact points on the copper strip (only the little squares just below the bar code). Caution! Do not use the eraser on the nozzles that were cleaned, as this will damage the cartridge.
7. Using a clean part of your dry paper towel, wipe the eraser dust off the contacts; ensure that they are dry, and snap the cartridge back into the printer.
8. Make sure to install the cartridges following the instructions in your User's Guide, selecting Old Cartridge. Failure to do so could reset your ink levels as explained above.
9. Repeat the nozzle cleaning procedure one more time. At this point the diagonal lines should be solid.
10. If they are not and you think the cartridges should have ink in them, contact our technicians by e-mail and let them know the results of this test.
4. Reset the ink levels:
Lexmark printer cartridges do not have ink sensors. The levels of ink are produced by a mathematical calculation of ink drops and page counts. The printer stores this information and then writes it to the win.ini file on your computer.

Ink levels can be reset by telling the printer you have installed a new ink cartridge or by reinstalling the printer drivers and selecting Cartridges Installed. Once ink levels have been reset, there is no way to change them except by printing.

Accordingly, even if your computer says that your ink is full for a particular cartridge, it may be incorrect and the cartridge may need to be replaced. You may want to try a new cartridge to see if that clears up any print quality problems.
