I think you are getting confused between an amplifier and a pre-amplifier. The AVR 21g is an amplifier, which will have a pre-amplifier built into it. A power amplifier is an amplifier. It has the ability to drive speakers. However one on it's own, you can't connect tape decks, record players or any device you want to listen to. A pre-amplifier doesn't have the ability to drive speakers. But you can connect devices to it. As the device you are asking about is a audio video receiver (AVR) then it will have both amps in it. Some of this type even have the ability to have both amps separate.

This old devices require a electrolytic capacitor replacement (recap), grease all the mechanisms and a full check-up. There is nothing you can do about it. Send it over to a repair shop.

Check your speaker wires, if they are crossed somewhere then the system protects it's self.

I think you will struggle to find the exact speaker.. Choose one that is the same physical size, and rating i.e. OHM, and WATTS.. Ebay should have some.
