SOURCE: where is the oil filter on my yamaha V-star 1100
On the right side of the bike (right side when ou are sitting on it) just above the rear brake lever behind a small circular plate. remove the plate and the oil filter is inside (you will easily see it). Warning---on these bikes you have to drop the front exhaust header and right floor board in order to change the oil filter unless you install a after market oil filter relocation kit. If you plan on changing your own oil it is highly recommended to install this relocation kit.
SOURCE: Where does the oil come out of a 2004 Yamaha 1100 VStar Classic
Oil drain plug is located near the bottom of the engine, left side toward the front. The oil filter element is located on the right side of the engine under the cover toward the front. Changing the oil filter usually requires removal of the front exhaust pipe. There is an aftermarket filter relocation kit that replaces the filter element with a spin on filter that mounts on the front of the bike.
SOURCE: I have a 2003 Yamaha
I have a 650, there is no dipstick, just a sight glass. I believe that the two bikes are the same in this department. Also, the oil needs to be right in the center of that sight glass (it's on the left side, by where your foot goes). Also, the bike MUST be standing straight up to check the oil accurately; either on a jack/stand, or by having someone sit on it while you check it.
