sounds like the starter or starter solonid is bad ,if you have an amp meter test the starter or remove the starter and take it to your auto parts store and have it tested .most will test it free.also check all cables and terminals coming off of battery for good connections. If cables are corodded replace them, If engine is running rough check timeing of engine, timeing chain or belt may have jumped time

Check voltage at starter (small wire) then check starter contacts..remove starter and take it apart. If they look chewed up replaace them.

Had the same problem and found burned contacts in 97 Diesel.

You can try crossing a screwdriver on the starter solinoid between the big stud and the little one if it doesent engauge then the starter is bad.

Well diesels are known to be cold, I would chack out your fuel filter and fuel pump to see, if they are good or not.

i have a c180 merc petrol when starting the starter dosnt engage prop for afew turns then it engages and engine starts i have change the ring gear plus change the starter and still geting the same prob

The disarm switch on the latch inside the door is most likely defective, pull the door panel and test it for proper function.
