Thank you so much for your prompt reply. My son stopped over late this afternoon and I also told him about the problem. He started the engine and told me to press the front defroster button, the the inside heat plus defroster button combined; the problem started again. Apparently it has something to do with the air compressor. Both of the heater buttons (upper and lower heat but not the combined button) are ok. It's just the ones that I mentioned. He's going to come over and unplug the compressor. Thank you, again, for the prompt reply. Trying to diagnose without the "patient" there is like asking a doctor over the phone why the baby is running a fever. You've been great.

Burning rubber smell 2001 mercury sable

Oil residue from a large leak can take a long time to burn off, but it should be OK after a few months. You may be smelling the tires, and you did say it smells like "burning rubber" so make sure the tires are not rubbing on anything.

I have a burning rubber smell coming from left rear on my 2001 silverado after driving

You may have a stuck brake shoe. The smell is more likely a burning carbon smell, which would be the break pad itself. You will need to crawl under and see if any visible burn marks or burned wires are present. Outside that, move to the actual break. 1 possible sign would be large amount of "dust" on the wheel and around the actual break, more than with the other 3 wheels.

White smoke and the smell of burning rubber. I have had lots maintenance of work done to my car. I was starting to notice and smell burn oil. I had a small valve cover leak so I just had the whole...

Bradley,
You have stated two problems. Coming to second first. Smell of burning rubber. in the car rubber is only at two places where it can burn, The tyres, unlikely as you have not commented upon your driving habits. Some people like to rev the engine so much before take off that the tyres go burning for the first few hundred meters. And then there is rubber on the wires and cables. You have to check the wires for any heat while the engine is running.
Coming to the first now. White smoke is generally of unburnt fiel and not oil. Oil alwayd give black smoke and that is the indication you get when the exhaust is giving black smoke. That means that the engine is consuming oil. if it is white then that indicates that the engine is cold and burning more gas/diesel. Is your a diesel vehicle?? But as you say it from under the hood. And that too behind the engine block. May be that the gasket is leaking from somewhere. If you could check the engine oil level for a few days early in the morning before starting the engine. If the level drops and the exhaust tail pipe does not blacken your finger when you rub it in it would mean that the oil is being burnt. Now what I suggest is that with the engine running and hand brakes on, go under the car with hood open and try to locate the source of the smoke. I am sure you would be able to locate it.
Then we talk again.

MPV 2001 burning smell, high whine?

Sound like the alternator bearings are seized or about to seize. The noise could be the bearings or the belt and the smell may be either of them also.

Rough idle

Mercury had a recall on 3.0 duratech motors in 2000 and 2001. If you get a fuel smell at startup then you might have a bad lower intake gasket, it could cause a miss if seal is cracked. Article No. 01-4-3 you can get it on AllData.

Also, check the PC rubber L piece that runs from the PVC valve to under the throttle control - it could be busted.

Make sure ignition wires are not cracked. If you haven't tuned it up in over 30-40K consider doing that.

1989 Mercury Sable, 3.0L V-6, Auto Trans. Engine Idles at about 2000 RPM.

Check your vacuum hoses (They are 3/8" Rubber hosing on the right side of the engine, you will need to remove the air intake piping (Also remove the throttle body to make accessing them easier) This is the #1 cause of high idling in the 3.0 OHV and 3.0 DOHC sable engines.
