Cranks but won't start like it has no gas

The fuel pump went out so I changed it and fuel filter. It ran good for about a month then it started sputtering. Faulty fuel injector. Changed that and added fuel injector cleaner. Ran good two days and then started sputtering. The next morning it wouldn't start. Changed spark plugs and wires, cap and rotor. Ran great one day, the next morning it wouldn't start. I couldn't hear the fuel pump running so I took it back and installed the new one. Ran great that day but the next morning it wouldn't start. Unhooked battery for 20 minutes and hooked it back up and it ran for a day. Next morning it wouldn't start. Tried battery trick again and it won't start. It always sounds like it isn't getting fuel. And it has been raining everyday. Thinking moisture on ignition coil or loose wire or bad connection to fuel pump? I am out of ideas. I have also installed a new fuel pump relay. There is no check engine light on.

No I didn't know about resetting the alarm/immobiliser system . How do I go about doing that?

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

I am checking into getting a remote pad from the vw dealer. Today I put the key in the passengers door and unlocked it then locked it and held it for 30 seconds and the car started. I don't know if that is just a freak thing or if it actually did something. I am guessing it was a freak thing.
But thank you for your advice and help. I will post again if the car continues to run and I will get a remote and do what you suggested. Thank you

The next time it rained it wouldn't start again. So I put a plastic bag around the ignition coil to keep water from getting to it and it has ran fine in the rain and sun. Now I just have to replace the coil.

Did you reset the alarm/immobiliser system every time the power was disconnected???

unlock the car with the key and hold key over, windows may go down, then lock the car with the key/hold over windows may go up/shut sunroof(if fitted)then with the remote, press and hold the lock button for 30 secs.you have just reset the alarm immobiliser system....did you know that if you take the key out of the ignition the windows are still live until you open a door....or that if you press the button to raise the window and you put your hand into the frame it will rollback...the third time it will trap your fingers so be warned.(its called the comfort setting)and is not in the handbook.....

  • Anonymous May 22, 2010

The car doesn't have a remote with it. It only came with a key to the door. Will it still work if I use the key on the door for 30 seconds?

  • Anonymous May 22, 2010

the remote has a rolling code and a fixed code,so that everytime it is locked/unlocked the rolling code changes.

the key only has the immobiliser code inbuilt(part of the fixed code)so you cannot reset the alarm/immobiliser without both.

the remotes are expensive, sorry, and you need them (2)

good fun with the key though......

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

turning/holding the key over is the start of reseting the locking system, the key has a transponder inbuilt in it so the car should recognise it,hence start the car and let it run.the remote is for setting the rolling code so no other vw owner can start your car with thier remote.

please rate my reply.....makes me feel loved......

I ran out of gas. Put in gas. Now it's turning over but not starting. Should I change the plugs.

If your fuel pump is in the gas tank the fuel pump is cooled and lubricated by the gas. If you run out of gas and keep trying to start it many times you can damage the fuel pump. If you have a older car you can try putting a little gas in the carburetor and see if it cranks, if it cranks with gas in carburetor you know it is a lack of fuel problem. You might try spraying starting fluid in air filter but to much can damage your engine. Some links below may provide some help.

Your vehicle fuel pump can run and pump gas but depending on your vehicle you may not have enough fuel pressure to run. I would check your fuel pump fuse and relay and fuel inertia switch/fuel pump kill switch if you have one. I do not know why running out of gas would cause them to fail but it is something to check.

I believe fuel pump bad in 2004 durango 4x4 hemi Cranks but no start. Wanted to check fuses and relays for it

Something to think about. You should never let a gas tank run out or low as this is where any dirt settles at the bottom of the tank. I have seen a problem like yours and the fuel filter was plugged because of dirt in the bottom of the tank. Should never let a tank get lower than a quarter of a tank.

2002 chevy 3500 duramax 6.6 ran hot now cranks but won't start

Check spark plugs, leads, distributor cap & rotor arm, fuel pump, fuel filter, coil pack(s), relays, replace any items that are suspect IE Fuel filter which has probably not been changed since new even though they should be changed on all vehicles every 18 months, all of this can be done at home & will save you a lot of bucks in mechanic/garage fees,

93 chrysler t&c awd changed fuel pump and filter, van ran fine again for about 2 months now won't start and don't hear the fuel pump. changed the oil pressure sending unit and still won

fuel pick-up in tank is blocked it has a sock over the end as a gross filter to keep out any big junk from getting sucked into the pump and causing damage to it. the sock can get so plugged up that no fuel will flow, causing the pump to run for a short time then with no fuel flow to cool it it trips the safety and shuts off

2002 Ford Explorer ran out of gas put gas in and won't restart. replaced fuel pump and fuel filter still won't start. Cranks but won't start

Most Fords have a fuel reset button. When you ran out of gas you tripped the circuit. Most of the time the button will be on the passenger side by the kick panel. The exact location should be in your owners manual or your local library or auto parts store will have a copy of one for your specific vehicle.

1997 GMC K1500 4x4 5.7 ex.cab SFI injection system

I would check the fuel lines themselves and make sure there is no blockage. If not you might want to check your fuel injectors and see if they need to be replaced. also make sure you didnt install fuel filter backwards.

1997 GMC K1500 4x4 5.7 ex.cab SFI injection system

fuel pump died replaced it truck ran poorly afterwards. Had a prussuer test done pump determend pump was no good. Put in another ran good for 2 days started running poorly hard to start no power. 2nd fuel pump. So i figure another bad new fuel pump wow changed it put in a third brand new fuel pump. Still will not eve start now. I had it tuned up 2 months ago new plugs rotor, cap, etc. put in a new fuel filter made sure it is on proper checked all connections for leaks. this cannot be a fuel pump problem now. no problem with the elctrical i figure i have great spark on ignition tester. I can hear the fuel pump prime when i turn the key. but when i went and checked the fuel port i had no pressure. When it is being cranked gas sews out of the test port. Also i dont if this is comon cause i used to turn my keyand go. but when i have someone turn the key and i listen at the gas tank whn the key is shut off i hear gs spraying back into the gas tank. So i am open for opinions.
