Sounds to me like a fuel related problem. What i would do first is check fuel filter then air filter. Check TPS (throttle positioning sensor)<<< that is my guess not seeing the car and also check fuel pressure. Fuel pressure should be around 40 to 55 PSI

Does not sound serious as long as the car otherwise seems to be doing what it should. Don't drive if the engine is running hot or it is leaking fluids. Start with fuel filter or faulty fuel pump. Could be other things but if the car has had regular servicing then should not be anything major eg broken breather hoses . I would get a mechanical inspection for piece of mind.
This engine is electronically controlled so the first thing that must be done here is to have the systems control computer tested for fault codes and then do the proper diagnostics based on those codes.
most likely a bad fuel pump, do you hear it hum when the key is on? fuel pump has to pump 180 pounds of pressure to operatethe motor, some pumps do come on but don't pump enough pressure for car to run.if ou have spark but no run, it's a fuel issue. you wre right o replace the inline filter, that's where i would've started.i suggest you replace that fuel pump. if you disconnect the fuel line at filter@ turn the key on, the gas should shoot out about 20 feet. hop this helps!!
Shortage of fuel is your problem. Please make sure that enough fuel is reaching the injectors/cylinders . And while you are at it please clean the air filters as well.
sounds like a large vacuum leak to me possibly a bad mass airflow sensor but i would pinch off vacuum lines maybe spray a little carb spray around throttle body and intake area to try and locate any vacuum leaks
