If you have the 5.9 engine, the T stat is under the nozzle where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine.

If you have the 4.7 motor, the T stat is behind the composite nozzle on the engine end of the lower hose.

Be sure to soak the bolts on the 4.7 motor nozzle and don't over torque them when loosening or tightening as they will easily break turning a minor repair into a major frustration.

Also, the 4.7 motor has a special "burping" process you must go through after servicing the cooling system to purge air from it. Otherwise, it will surely overheat.

I recommend the OEM T stat if you have the 4.7 unit. It runs $26 or so but is worth it.

I have a 2004 During that starts to overheat when sitting in traffic. I have checked and I don't see any water flow. Is this the thermostat?

You might try a prestone super flush out kit to clean all the rust and debris from the cooling system. Then take a garden hose and spray down the coils on the radiator to remove dust and dirt. If the coils are dirty and blocked by dust and dirt it will cause the vehicle to overheat. Last, check your thermostat. If its not opening, it will prevent the circulation of antifreeze through the engine.

Heat 2001 dodge durango

a bad heater core will just leak. it could leak alot. do you ever smell antifreeze? check the coolant level. it can get pretty low before it will overheat. the thermostat should be ok but there could be corrosion. when you had the water pump replaced was the cooling system flushed? 2001, its probably due for a flush. what coolant does it take? (green or orange)

Here is a shot in the dark, without knowing year , size engine, or transmission. But it sounds like you may have transmission fluid in the cooling system, If so the transmission cooler in the radiator may be bad. Just a thought.
