I quote from service manual
1 . Raise and support the truck. Remove the rear wheels, the brake drum or brake caliper and
rotor. If this is a disc brake, support caliper with wire. Remove seal retainer nuts from axle
housing.
2 . Pull out the axle shaft
from housing. Remove the snap ring and bearing race from the axle shaft.
Cut the bearing retainer. Break the bearing cage using a hammer and
chisel and remove cage and rollers.
3 . Remove the oil seal, the seal retainer and the parking brake assembly (rear).
Using a hydraulic press and bearing splitter, press the inner race from
axle shaft. Inspect axle shaft for seal wear.
Ensure that the shaft is not bent.
If you do not want to remove the front transaxle (pumpkin) or drop it, then replace the HALF shafts by removing them at the inner CV joint (assuming you have disassembled the knuckle, ball joints, etc. The shaft will hang in there and NOT come out. You can disassemble and remove the CV shaft by removing the clip on the inner CV joint at the 'cup' where then inner CV joint resides. Once you do that you can remove the clip that retains the CV Half shaft. This is certainly MUCH faster and easier than removing or dropping the front transaxle, as 99% of the time, ONLY the CV half shafts need to be repaired or replaced. Much cheaper to just replace each shaft without the inner joint. And easier. I have a '90 Isuzu 4x4 pickup and the procedure is about the same.
SOURCE: rear differential axle removal
remove the 'locking bolt', once the pin is out the c-clips shoud fall out unless this is a floating axle in which the axles are attached at the hub.

SOURCE: Leaking rear axle seal
Yes...You need to also remove the cross shaft for the spider gears (retained by either a bolt or drift pin) and then push the axle inward to remove the "c" clip on the end.
It isn't difficult but you may want to get yourself a haynes or chiltons manual to help a bit.You need to take care that after the cross shaft is out that you don't let the spider gears walk out of the housing.
Top of Form 1
Raise the vehicle and remove the rear wheels.
Clean all dirt from the housing cover and remove the housing cover to drain the lubricant.
Remove the brake drum.
Rotate the differential case until the differential pinion shaft lockscrew can be removed. Remove the lockscrew and pinion shaft.
Push the axle shafts toward the center of the vehicle and remove the C-locks from the grooves on the axle shafts.
Pull the axle shafts from the housing, being careful not to damage the bearing which remains in the housing.
Inspect the axle shaft bearings and replace any doubtful parts. Whenever the axle shaft is replaced, the bearings should also be replaced.
Remove the axle shaft seal from the bore in the housing, using the button end of the axle shaft.
Remove the axle shaft bearing from the housing. Do not reuse the bearing or the seal.
Check the bearing shoulder in the axle housing for imperfections. These should be corrected with a file or polish.
