2000 Cougar with rumbling noise.

I have a 2000 Cougar with 46000 original miles. It`s making a rumbling sound starting at 50MPH and up. When I turn to the right it lessens, when I turn to the left it makes no difference in sound.

My guess is, the tires have uneven wear, probably in the front. Block the back wheels, put on the parking brake. Jack up the front -- one wheel should do. Turn on the engine. You may need to shift to Drive. With the wheel spinning, touch it with the shaft of a screwdriver, just to see if it is round.

If the tire is not round, the problem can be wheel alignment and/or shock absorbers. Fix that and get new tires.

Hope this helps.

There are several places to look. If it is a lower pitch vibration, look into front wheel bearings and rear axle bearings. A bad u-joint will produce a higher pitched vibration and may lessen as you lift the throttle. They also will give a hi-low squeak when backing up.

Rattling noise and battery light on?

It may be the alternator bearing/bushing that is making the noise and may lead to alternator breakdown. This will result in battery not charging and the light on the dash coming on. You need to confirm this.

1996 Ford E250 makes rough rumble noise on inclines or when speed

I'm thinking it may be the differential (rear end). With that many miles on the vehicle, it would not be uncommon for the u joints or differential to make noise due to increased tolerances from normal wear. I'd look into that. You may be surprized.

Good Luck and hope this helps.

2000 Lincoln LS rumble from 40 - 45 mph

See If the pitch changes when you swerve the car from left to right. You don'e have to swerve hard enough to scareanyone, just enough to load one side more than another. If the pitch changes, you likly have a bad wheel bearing or tire. Tires will make any noise a wheel bearing will so switch tires first side to side and see if the problem fgollows the tires. If not then check the wheel bearing.
Also and maybe first:

The fact that the noise is limited to such a narrow speed could also indicate an aerodynamic issue such as a roof rack or bike rack or somthing like that having moved and is now vibrating.
