Sound quality is subjective. What sounds good to me may not sound good to you. Always try to cut bass/treble settings when possible rather than boost. The best way to tine a stereo without any fancy equipment is to use a high quality copy of a song you are familiar with then adjust the settings appropriatley.

Sounds like a short in the ignition switch. Next time it does it, try shaking and turning the steering wheel while you're turning the key to start. If this doesn't work, try cycling the switch on and off several times. Chances are, this is your problem.
