You mean you release the handle to open the gas door but the gas door is not open...? A: If so. Ask a helper to pull the gas door release lever and hold it. Now you need to manually open the door by hands. The spring load or clip that push the door open might be bend or broken. If so fix it or replace new one.
FIRST: try using the gas release lever from inside the car with the driver side door closed.
My 2006 Jetta gas release lever would only work if the driver door were shut and I pulled the release from the inside car interior.
Turns out it was a severed door wire (NOT THE RELEASE CABLE). Thus when the door was open, it stretched the damaged wire and so none of the door controls worked unless the door was closed. ie windows, trunk release, and gas release.
It was a $600 repair at the dealership, parts and labor! :(
Some cars from these company's have security device on the gas doors. Some cars have to have both front doors unlocked before the gas door will open and some cars have a panel in the trunk with a rope or a lever behind them
Open the trunk and behind the trim cover near the gas door only on the inside there is a cable pull there also. the owners manual will show you where it is it you have it.
Have someone pull the gas door release. With a credit card, or something like it, popsicle stick, nail file, etc, insert it at the side of the door that opens, not the hinged side. While your assistant is pulling the lever, see if you can manually pull the door open. If it opens, you have a broken fuel door spring. Toyota parts depts sell them for 3 dollars. The spring is there to "pop" the door open, when you pull the lever. If it is broken, and they break rather often, it needs replaced.
If the lever itself is broken remove it it will have a cable attached to it. unhook the lever from the cable and pull the inner cord of the cable with plyer's or simular. If the lever is'nt broken it may be stressed so follow the same process. As to removing check arround the lever for screws if no screws the lever pivets on a pin gently tap out the pin with a small punch and hammer if you havent got a suitable punch then file or cut the point of a small nail.
I had the same problem. My gas door wouldn't open when I pulled the lever. My boyfriend was just messing around with my car one day and he connected a medium-sized spring to the bolt on the lower right corner...below where the gas cap goes. Now the door opens automatically when the lever is pulled. Hope this helps.
More than likely the metal spring on the inside of the gas door is broken where the plastic attaches. Have someone hold the fuel door lever in the release position while you gently use a flat head screw drive to open the door. The part should cost you less than $10 at Toyota.
If you can't glue the handle back on, e.g. with urethane glue (gorilla glue, Elmers Nano, etc.; use as directed, cleaning lever and plastic cover with soap and water just before gluing) then you can just buy a part like Nissan 84640-9E000 (1998 Altima exact replacement; Nissan call it a Handle- Trunk & Gas Door Release.)
That will work fine as long as the gas filler door mechanism isn't messed up; go check for obstructions once you open the door, presumably by using a small locking pliers over a cloth or some rubber on the lever (or the cable wire.)
The trick is, you get to replace it with the door open; use a blade screwdriver to pry the running-board trim up, unscrew the bolt on the trim to the left and pry that off, undo some expander bolts holding the carpet across the running-board area, and wrangle the carpet away from the lever you want to replace. Some 10mm wrench work gets the lever loose, and you tilt the loosened stuff forwards to be able to remove the cable. Regrease the bolts and cable run as well as you can. Thread the new handle through the carpet before you bolt it in; it's harder to set up and bolt, but you don't have to cut the carpet or remove the seat!
