Engine overheat at high rpm

if your towing it will heat up faster,, watch the rpm's ,, if you need to downshift during uphill climbs do so,, keep the RPM's a little higher than normal, as far as the sputtering,, that could also be due to the towing and extra weight on the motor,, it could be that some of the components are weak, and towing just makes you notice them more, check the cap for build-up on the contact points, and also, the rotor , depending on the miles already on your plugs they too could be at the end of their life cycle, with the over heating, make sure you have a good mix of antifreeze and water in the radiator, and make sure the fan is functioning properly
