Usually all pulleys have a dent on them and somewhere on the engine body close to the pulley you will find the marking

SOURCE: timing marks trooper 1985 mod

Refer to Figures 1,2,3,4 when performing 17-step timing procedure for 1981-1985 Diesel Engines.

Procedure - Timing Belt replacement.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

2. Remove the timing belt cover. Remove the injection pump sprocket flange.

3. Using a prybar, remove the tension spring from the timing belt tensioner.

When removing the tension spring, avoid using excessive force for the spring may become distorted.

4. Remove the tensioner pulley bolt and the pulley.

5. Remove the timing belt and discard it.

To install:

6. Rotate the crankshaft to bring the No. 1 piston to TDC of the compression stroke.

7. Align the timing marks on the injection pump sprocket with the camshaft sprocket; the marks must be facing each other.

8. Using a new timing belt, install it in the following sequence: crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket and the injection pump sprocket; the slack must be between the injection pump and camshaft sprockets.

9. Install the tension center and the tension pulley so the end of the tension center is fitted against both pins on the timing pulley housing.

10. Hand tighten the nut so the tension pulley can be rotated freely.

11. Install the tension spring and semi-tighten the pulley nut to 22-36 ft. lbs. (30-48 Nm).

12. Rotate the crankshaft 2 full turns clockwise to seat the belt and further turn the crankshaft 90° beyond TDC to settle the injection pump.

13. Loosen the tension pulley nut to take up the timing belt slack. Tighten the tension pulley nut to 79-94 ft. lbs. (108-128 Nm).

14. Install the injection pump sprocket flange; the hole in the outer circumference of the flange should be aligned with the triangular timing mark on the injection pump sprocket.

15. Rotate the crankshaft 2 full turns clockwise to bring the No. 1 piston to TDC of the compression stroke. Make sure the triangular timing mark on the timing sprocket is aligned with the hole in the flange, then, measure the timing belt tension; it should be 33-55 lbs.

16. Install the timing belt cover.

17. Connect the negative battery cable.

SOURCE: how do i check timing marks on tata indica lsi

The timing marks are notches on the engine block and all the pulleys that the belt goes around! Before removing the belt make sure all pulleys are in line with there mark! If not sure contact your local mechanic!

My tata indica lsi 1.4l petrol 2006 model is sucking air through exhaust valves but timing is correct

What you are describing only occurs when the camshaft/engine timing is not correct.

When the camshaft timing is set, the #1 piston must be at TDC (top dead center), and the intake and exhaust valves are closed. Any timing marks should be aligned at this point. On a vehicle with a distributor, you would want to install it with the ignition rotor pointing at the #1 spark plug wire when the crank and camshaft are at this position.

The camshaft turns at 1/2 the speed of the crankshaft, so, if it's doing the opposite of what it should be doing, the timing is off by 1/2 turn of the camshaft, 180 degrees.

Diesel engine. In the morning when the vehicle had been standing for a day, when cranking the engine it will start smooth for a second and then splutters / running rough and not respond to the acceler

2 things cause these type of problem both are related to air is getting into injection system #1 loose or pin holes in hoses from fuel tank to injection pump #2 fuel shut off solenoid is fully seating allow drain back. back car up driveway or place rear tires on some ramps with a near full tank this should keep fuel in injection system see if it starts and runs better this way if so then test for these problems

Tata indica Timing marks

On. An Indica petroll or diesel there aren't aany timing marks as to say, firstly remove cylinder head, then attach a power bar or ratchet with socket to to bolt on crank shaft pulley. Rotate the engine anti-clockwise until piston one is at TDC (highest point it can go). Then at Te front of engine halfway down the block where engine meets bell housing there is a hole to. Insert a 8mm long bolt, this will lock the crankshaft. On the head on the cam shaft end cap is a hole, insert a screwdriver to fit and rotate cam with. A ratchet until the screwdriver slots in place and the cam cannot move. Replace the head, torque the bolts, fit the timing belt and tension it. Once this is done remove the locking bolt and screwdriver, Replace the cam-tappet. Cover and start the engine
