My 2005 Grand Prix is leaking coolant. I thought it was the water pump due to the location of the puddle of antifreeze on the ground. The area is dry around the water pump and I'm thinking its leaking from the coolant elbow going to the intake.Would this leak quicker while driving then it would idling?

Leaks get worse when engine is at operating temp and pressure builds. Rent a cooling system pressure tester and pressurize the system. Then you'll see the leak

SOURCE: leaking coolant

These plastic elbows (3.8L Engine) do fail. To the best of my knowledge this is a dealer only item, which is not a big deal as the cost is low (in terms of car repair). Remove the alternator to gain access to the elbow. Monitor the coolant level following repair.

As you probably know, don't let the engine run low on coolant as engine damage will follow.

SOURCE: '97 Grand Prix 3.1L...Head Gasket? Manifold? Control Module?

Hi Melody- it feels like you could be right. it feels like your car was well worn when you got it. common causes of overheating are coolant too low, which is what i suspect was the case when you first got it. a stuck closed thermostat not allowing coolant to circulate. i assume you have an electric cooling fan- check to see if your fan motor is fried. you could also have large air pockets inside your cooling system which can give false coolant level. when you pour coolant into your radiator rather than your overflow tank, you introduce air into the cooling system that has to be purged by allowing the bubbles to work their way out through your radiator by squeezing your coolant hose you can assist the escape of these air pockets (with engine running) evidence of a cracked head can be presence of coolant in your engine oil-pull your oil dipstick and look. you say no evidence of coolant leakage, however, look underneath your car and check to see if there is coolant splatter surrounding the underside. it maybe that your car is maintaining enough pressure to run but when engine temps reach a point to where the radiator fan should kick on, and/or the thermostat should open to allow coolant flow and these things dont happen-the result is what you describe with no power and overheating that will eventually overstress your head(s) warped heads can cause the symptoms you describe. you can perform a compression test to help pinpoint a blown cyl. an idea for fixing your car for cheap would be to take it to your local high school auto shop. the only way kids learn the trade is by subject cars. ill bet you can even arrange them to pick it up. the will fix your car for cost. you would only need to supply whatever parts are needed to make the repair. its a win-win situation because they get to learn by fixing your car and you get to use your car for doing mommy things without fear of labor fees. which are around $120/hr. I hope i have helped you with your car good luck!

IF THERE IS ENOUGH HOSE, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO CUT THE END OFF THE RUBBER ELBOW AND CLAMP IT BACK IN PLACE. OR PERHAPS THE FITTING ON THE OVERFLOW TANK MAY BE LEAKING. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FILL THE OVERFLOW WHILE THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING. PLEASE KEEP ME INFORMED. GOOD LUCK. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA. AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR AN HONEST RATING.

SOURCE: the coolant leaked right out onto the ground, the pump is working

there is an overflow tube for the coolant resovoir. if the vehicle is running fine, no busted hoses or radiator, and not overheating then probably you just put too much coolant in. keep driving it and keep an eye on the coolant levels and temperature. if those remain ok then you should have nothing to worry about

2006 pontiac grand prix smells antifreeze in car

Is there coolant leaking inside the car? Check the floor under the passenger side dashboard. If the carpet is wet your heater core is leaking.

If the floor is dry check the coolant elbows going from the block into the automatic belt tensioner. That's inside the engine compartment. They are notorious for leaking. You may not be able to see the leak because it drips onto the block and evaporates. That's what the smell may be.

Search google images for "3800 series 3 coolant elbow" to see the part I am talking about.

The only way to find a coolant leak is to pressurize the cooling system. You can rent a coolant pressure tester from an auto supply store. Pressurize the system and look for leaks. You may have a leaking water pump.

The elbows can be purchased from the dealer. The water pump you can get from an auto supplier. Might as well change the thermostat while you are doing the other repair. Drain the cooling system and refill with fresh dex coolant.

Make sure you bleed all of the air out of the system or the car will overheat.

My 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix is overheating and leaking antifreeze, I add coolant every few days then the temp goes up and I have to add coolant again. There doesn't seem to be any smoke coming from the...

You should look under the car after it sits a while and see if there is antifreeze on the ground. If so try to see where it could be leaking under the hood directly over the puddle. You could have a leaking water pump. If so there would be dampness under the right side of engine compartment. Also check the radiator hoses at front of car.

I am leaking coolant from somewhere. when I run my car, the engine smells like hot coolant. I have checked the oil, and the coolant isn't mixing with the oil. I have read about intake manifold...

First, I am assuming that your vehicle is equipped with the 3.1L V-6 and NOT the 3.8L V-6? (Engine size is really nice to know in situations like this!)

It could be any where in the cooling system. The intake gaskets also like to leak externally. A bad intake gasket does not always mix antifreeze with the oil. Take a flashlight and look for coolant on top and/or down each side of the transmission bell housing. This is VERY common on these engines. It may be leaking just enough to where the exhaust crossover pipe is burning it up (and stinking) before it has a chance to run on the ground. Also look for stains on the intake manifold-to block mating surfaces and on the side of the bell housing that will indicate a leak. if your vehicle is still using Dex-Cool, the stains will be pink. If your coolant has been changed to green antifreeze, the stains will usually be real white or dark green depending on the brand and the severity of the leak.

If there are no leaks or stains in this area, then look around the water pump area for the same things. The radiator or coolant hoses (including heater hoses) could also be leaking. If it is stinking when the engine is hot, then you could get it hot then shut if off and look for steam.

TIP: A bright LED flashlight works really good for locating steam.

Why does my 2000 pontiac grand am leak coolant

coolant leaking could come from different areas, i would 1st start checking for leaks around the thermostat area, this is normally where the top radiator hose connects too, then i would look at the water pump area to see if any coolant is visable on the outside of it, also check your heater hoses for leaks too, some cars have even had antifreeze leaks coming from the freeze plugs, which are installed into the engines block, they are normally on the sides of the engines. don't forget to check out the radiator, a good way to find antifreze leaks is after you drive the car for a while, and then park it, and then put a large piece of cardboard under your car, make it large enough to go from the radiator to at least the windshield area, if it leaks then, you will be able to see what area the antifreeze has leaked.

check your water pump for leaks. If its coming for the pump housing it will need to be replaced. Check the gasket area where the pump bolts to the block.. If water is not from the pump or around it check your hoses and clamps. check thermostat housing.

Leaking antifreeze, doesn't run hot, took off hoses thought it was the top hose and can't see anything wrong with it. Can't see any cracks in radiatior any ideas?

You state you checked the top hose, did you check the bottom hose as well? Also, there is the possibility it could be leaking at the water pump.

Where is the water pump located in my 2005 Grand Prix?? I keep having to add antifreeze and i noticed a puddle on the underside of my car when i pulled out on the passenger side. Is that what it could be...

It could be the water pump but keep in mind, you have a water pump hose and also your overflow tank. These are just a few within that area. Try changing out the top on your overflow tank. The seal in these get worn and can't hold the pressure like it should. EXAMPLE: the cap holds 15psi and the radiator pushes 12psi well over time your cap can only hold 6-8psi so your tank will over flow from the defective. The pump will be on the passanger side between all those pulley's and belt. Any of these places can make you think it;s the pump but we need to find out excactly where it's coming from to point you in the right direction. Try the cap first $8 for the part.
