What should it cost to have the right outer tie rod replaced & if I replace the right one Should I replace the left also

Can't use it safely like that,stop using
it & resolve.
May have more than one issue adding up to the play.

Raise the vehicle and wiggle the wheels left and right. You would know which one has a play if its the inner or the outer. the inner tie rod connects close to the rack and pinion. The outer is close to the tire. Goodluck

Hello arriedad: My name is Roger and I will help with your question. It would depend on which tie rod end you are replacing.There are two right tie rod ends. You have a inner and a outer tie rod. The outer tie rod is easy. The inner takes a special tool to replace it. You will need an alignment when you are done as you will not be able to see when you have it correct. You can try to count the threads but the new end might be cut different. I would suggest that if you are not sure have a front end person perform the repairs. This way the alignment can be set at the same time. If not set you have premature tire failure. Some repairs are just best left to an expert if not for you then the safety of your family. The problem is probably not with the steering wheel- you most likely have bad tie rod ends.

You do not say how old your car/truck is, but the tie rod ends wear with time.

Usually it is the outer tie rod ends that go bad and cause loose steering, but you may want to replace both the inner and outer tie rod ends. Underneath, you can watch while somebody steers your wheels left and right, and you will see what ones are loose and need replacing.

Yes degreaser will not hurt it. The outer tie rod is retained only by one nut that connects it to the inner tie rod.Once you have this loosen just turn the outer tie rod to the left to remove it from the inner tie rod.

First loosen the jam nut with a 21mm wrench. Then use vise grips or whatever you have to make sure the rod can be turned that goes into the outer tie rod. Then remove the cotter pin and 17mm castle nut. Strike the hub where the tie rod goes through with a hammer repeatedly until the tie rod pops out of the hole.

Then simply unscrew the tie rod end and replace it. If the inner tie rod end is also damaged, or the rod is damaged you will need to replace them as well. Inner tie rods have a special tool to remove them, see your local auto parts store.

Remember, replacing an outer tie rod end changes your cars toe (alignment). You will require an alignment after replacing it, even if you think the car drives straight.

You have left and right inner tie rods and outer tie rods on your car.
You also have lower ball joints which can wear loose too....not to mention the left and right struts and upper strut bearings.

A cheap (China) tie rod may last only a year.(plastic inner wear points)
A good quality tie rod may last 10.(nylon and/or metal wear points)

The book calls for about 5 hours labor with a lift, air tools, and experience. It's a tough job. Here are a few tips, Take the lines loose from the rack; not the pump. With the tires off, Remove the nuts from the outer tie rods.Run the nuts back on the tie rods stud and hit the steering knuckle where the tie rod's stud goes through.This will free the stud. Remove the steering shaft from the rack.(take the bolt all the way out.Remove rack mounting bolts. Twist,pull ****,and fight the rack out the side of the car with the most room. The new rack will have inner tie rods already installed. Make sure the new rack is centered.(Turn left then right count the turns then center same # of turns from left to right). Count the threads or measure from the outer tie rod's jam nut to the last thread on the inner tie rod.(you can leave the jam nut in place and take the outer tie rod off and measure from the jam nut to the end of the rod.)Install the outer tie rods. Replace rack in car. hook up steering shaft.Bolt up rack. Hook up lines. Add fluid and work rack back and forth to bleed air. recheck fluid. Have it aligned. (or just take it to a shop.This job is going to be a nightmare!!!)

If this is a rack and pinion type steering, in order to remove the inner tie rods you will first have loosen the jam nut at the outer tie rod end,next unbolt the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle, unscrew the outer tie rod end off (be sure to count how many turns to remove), next remove the inner bellows boot (black boot) from the tie rod / rack and pinion, next is to unscrew the inner tie rod from the rack assembly (the do make a tool for this to make it easier) but if you do not have the tool,you can sometimes use a big pair of channel locks or a big enough wrench to fit on the fitting on the inside of the inner tie rod, and just unscrew the inner tie rod (normal left=loosen, right=tighten). Hope this helps. Would also recommend having it aligned after you are finished.

I can walk you through it, be sure it is your outer tie rod that is bad the inner tie rods go bad also. It's actually quite simple to replace. Jack up and secure car with safety stands, remove your tire. Remove cotter pin and the nut holding in onto your steering knuckle, Loosen lock nut on the inner tie rod shaft. Either rent or buy you a tie rod removal tool they are cheap, but autozone and many other stores have a tool loner service that is free. Remove the tie rod from the knuckle and hold inner shaft and rotate the outer rod end till it comes off. When you go back with the new one measure across the front ties on the front and on the rear side about the same place. Screw the new tie rod on till the fron and the back of the tires measure the same distance, that is zero toe. Most fwd cars drive great right there. Be sure you tighten everything properly and reinstall the cotter pin If this helps please vote fixya!
