Same problem on mine was a block fuel filter (quite common). About £70 fitted by main dealer. I'd stay away from whoever told you the above and get a second opinion!

SOURCE: 1 Red and 1 Amber warning light and message Restricted performance

Go to Auto Zone and ask the to run a diagnostic with their OBD-11 computer. This may still be a free service. Write down the error code/codes displayed. This should help pinpoint the correct sensor.

SOURCE: check engine light on restricted performance amber light on my 02 jag xj

What codes do you have?

Get the codes, look them up &
have a repair start over & resolve,
unless you can handle the fix

It is either in fail safe for overheating, ignition misfires
or trans problems

Amber engine light stays on after starting

Okay Russell, your check engine light is on,you can go to Autozone and they will scan your Jag. for free and it takes only a minute and a code will appear and they may be able to tell you what the code is or bring it back here and post it.

My x-type diesel has been struggling for a few months running poorly and struggles to start (more so when warm). Jag told me the EGR and inlet manifold was coked up - which I have now cleaned. runs much...

COULD HAVE BAD FUEL WRONG TYPE FUEL COULD NEED NEW AIR FILTER. DIESEL ENGINE NEEDS AIR TO OPERATE.IF AIR FILTER RESTRICTED.DIESEL ENGINE WONT RUN AND CLOGGED FUEL FILTER CAUSE STARTING PROBLEMS PROBLEMS WITH TURBOCHARGER OR TURBOCHARGER ACTUATOR WOULD CAUSE ENGINE RUN VERY SLOW NO POWER ON TAKE OFF.I SAY PROBLEM IN FUEL SYSTEM OR AIR INTAKE SYSTEM.IF YOU HAD ANY OTHER PROBLEMS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL FLASH ON.

Jaguar s-type restricted performance

I had the same problem. Restricted performance and running rough at 3000 RPM. I have an OBDII code reader and found that the problem was in the air mass flow sensor, which is just after the air filter. I pulled this out and found it was dirty and had butterfly wings in it. The last shop where I had the oil changed replaced the filter for me but put in the wrong size. Close but no cigar. Bought some *** Flow Sensor cleaner at auto store and fixed the problem. Get an OBDII reader with the ability to erase the codes. Comes in real handy.
