I'm the original owner, 36,000 miles. Has always run great. Lately won't start all of the time. I just hear clicking noises from rear passenger side. Went to mechanic and battery was replaced (not the hybrid battery) and seemed to fix it, but later that afternoon, same problem. Went to Ford service dept and they were unable to diagnose the problem as the car would start up each time they tried. After I drove home and stopped for groceries on the way, the car wouldn't start--same problem. After sitting for 5 to 15 or 20 minutes, it will start. I notice that many have posted similar problem. Would appreciate any info.

Sounds like the Fuel Pump, which is located in the Gas Tank, ahead of the rear wheels, basically under the rear door. The gas tank itself is not hard to remove, and you could get a kit available online. It's probably easier to do if you have ramps and back the rear wheels onto those two ramps, you can't do it as easily by just jacking up the car. If you have two hydraulic jacks, that might work as well.
If you buy the part, you want to bring it to a gas station to remove the gas tank, they should be able to do all the work for you in about one hour.
SOURCE: oil & filter change
If there is a Auto Zone around your area, you can get the oil and filter there with the step by step instructions needed to get the job gone. There is a oil filter wrench for you to buy to remove the old oil filter, buy the oil filter cup that attaches to the ratchet, the other wrenches tend to crush the filters. Keep me posted be glad to answer any questions and give you instructions to the oil change procedure if Auto ZOne could not help you or there is not one around you.

it is most likely defaulting to the electric motor due to the overheating to save the gas engine from damage.
SOURCE: Ford Escape Hybrid goes dead if not driven for 3 days straight
I have the same problem with my 2007 Escape Hybrid... First experienced it about 1 year ago. The vehicle produces periodic sounds like an electric motor running for several seconds. I believe this is from the motor driven safety relay that disconnects and reconnects the high voltage hybrid battery when the vehicle is not in use. I also can hear a high frequency scream that sounds like a switching inverter power supply. If the vehicle is unused for a day or two the 12V battery is discharged and a jump is needed to start the engine. Ford service could not diagnose the problem. The +12V battery tested OK, but since it was almost 3 years old it was replaced anyway. This helped for a while, but the problem returned after I recently left the vehicle unused for several days. I know the battery is good, it tests OK and is less than one year old! Somewhat reluctant to go back to the same Ford service agency because of their previous failure to fix it. Please advise if you have found a solution or have additional information. This is the only problem I have ever had with the hybrid Escape, but it is very annoying. I am forced to carry a jumper battery to make sure I don't get stranded.
