Dear Bill, You will need to find a mechanic who can remove the oil pressure sending unit from the engine block and insert a "real" oil pressure guage to tell if you really have a problem or not. Lots of factory dashboard guages are not very accurate over time. If you really do have that low of oil pressure, you need to address that quickly.
the oil pressure gauge only gets a reading when the engine is runningas the oil is being curculated. when you shut the vehicle off it should go back to zero and be there until the vehicle cranks back up. i hope this helps
Hi:
Usually your oil light doesnt come on unless you have less than 10 lbs of oil pressure. You either have a bad oil pressure sending unit, or your engines oil pump is bad. The only way to verify your engines oil pressure is to buy a direct reading pressure guage and install it on your truck, or have a mechanic check your engine oil pressure. Eitherway, you need to do something soon, because the long term effects of running with low oil pressure will ruin your truck engine.
I had the same problem and ended up changing the oil pump and it did not fix it. (Peace of mind anyway and it was cheap) I replaced the pressure sensor (that happens to be tucked in deep between the back of the engine and firewall) and the pressure gauge worked just fine after that.
buy a cheap manual oil pressure test gauge from a parts store, not the kind of guage you put under the dash but a tester, they come with different fittings for may app's, they are about $20, being sure of the pressure is worth that, if the pressure is ok then most likely the sending unit is defective.
hi ben
my answer would be yes i would wory about it...
Guages are put on vehicals for a reason not just for looks i would have the car hooked to a diagnostic center and checked even though the guage may be faulty but i wouldnt take a chance
